Tesla will stop making the Cybertruck next year, according to CEO Elon Musk, who said on X that the company will use the factory space to build more two-seater Cybercab robotaxis.

The decision to wind down the futuristic, steel-clad EV comes after just a few short years of underwhelming sales. When Musk handed over the first few Cybertrucks in late 2023, he predicted Tesla would sell around 250,000 per year. It was supposed to be such a cornerstone of Tesla’s future that, before construction began, the company talked about its Texas factory as the “Cybertruck factory.” But Tesla has instead sold just tens of thousands — total — over the last three years.

Honestly, I like the look of the cybertruck. I know it’s not the popular opinion, but I like that it challenges the boring cookie-cutter pickup truck design.

I think it bothers people that it doesnt fit the “traditional” idea of what a pickup should look like, but to me that’s a good thing. To me, the trad pickup design is ugly anyway. Ford F150? Ugly. Dodge Ram? Ugly. Chevy Silverado? Ugly! So yeah, the minimalist wedge-shape is a great way to shake up field. It’s a fun departure.

I also like that it’s an EV pickup. But I wish it were better at being an EV pickup, instead of a glorified grocery-getter. It seems to fail at simple hauling / off-road / towing tasks.

I do not like the build quality either. Or the stainless steel bodywork. Or the plastic bits. But many of these things could have been refined in later model years.

And of course the elephant in the room: Musk put his musky stank all over it. It’s synonymous with him, and he’s a festering Nazi shit-pustule. So that kills it for me.

I wish some other EV brand would have done the Cybertruck. I think in the right hands it would have been better.

Yeah, I agree with you. People would mock how it looked, and still do. I think it looks fine. It’s not a very popular opinion, I realize.

Given what I’ve read about it, I’m not sure I’d want to even take a short ride in it. Seems like it has many safety concerns. I have no idea how it’s even on the road…

And that’s before you get into all the many issues of the asshole Elon.

Yeah, it looks cool. As a concept. If it were just a design in a video game, I’d just shrug.

But it literally is the worst truck ever, made by one of the most evil men ever. Good fucking riddance.

I agree with you. It piqued my interest when it was first being teased and musk still had some plausibility that he was competent and well intentioned.

I live 8 miles from work in a rural area. I drive gravel roads every day, get feet of snowfall at a time, and I also have a need to regularly hall large materials. I recently got into a new to me 10 year old truck but was driving a sedan before that which was unsafe due to the heavy snows. I’d love a real electric truck and one that doesn’t have a stupid bed height. What I need isn’t available but there’s no reason it shouldn’t be. A 4x4 slate (w/o Bezos connected preferebly) would be sweet, a hylux champ, or a properly designed and built cybertruck would be sweet. I don’t want all the bells and whistles and gimmicks, just a cost appropriate tool to get me from a to b and to support the work I do.

If they plan to stop sometime next year, what the heck will they do with the unsold ones they currently park and the surplus they are producing until the closure?

The main difference is that the delorean is actually cool (mainly because it’s actually real stainless steel that they told you to clean with gasoline!)

Fortunately they are so terrible and Tesla is so terrible at providing parts that these will all be off the road within a few years.

I’m a school bus driver. The only cars that elementary school kids get excited about are the ones that piss me off: cybertrucks, teslas in general, corvettes, lamborghinis. No other cars exist for kids.

I like loudly pointing them out to my wife with, “Hey babe, look. It’s one of those Nazi cars!”

It’s really fun when there are other people around, especially the owner.

Why on Earth would someone design a cab to only seat two people? The only time in the last two years that I’ve used a cab, it was to travel with a group.

The best guess I can figure is that an insufferable loser like Elon can’t fathom having two or more people that want to be in the same car as him.

It feels like there’s a big gap between the cab and the y. Would a self driving 3 (which can fit 5 people and they already have factories to build 90%+ of) not make way more sense?

They built more capacity for the Y as it’s a better selling vehicle, and if you already have a small car for the 1 and 2 people trips, using something bigger with more storage for the 3-5 people trips does make sense. I’m sure 3s will eventually end up in it though even if it’s just a way to balance factory output. Like if the 3 is selling less in a quarter and the factory is idling more, maybe adding some 3s to the robotaxi fleet instead of y’s that quarter begins to make sense?

And the model y can also do two people.

So again, why focus so hard on a two seater?

The Model Y costs substantially more to build, is more complicated to repair and costs more to run per mile.

When only 1/5 rides need that, it’s cheaper to mass produce something else. The plan is to make millions of these.

I mean you don’t need to believe it’s going to happen, they only needed to believe while planning things and the impacts it would have on their decisions.

I thought so as well, but then when you think about it… most taxis are kind of just the back seat? Still weird not to make it a three seater bench though. I guess they want you to book two if you want more than 2 people, cha-ching.

The only time I have ever taken a cab was when it was just 2 people. If there are going to be more people, then I will just use one of my cars. You are limited in the number of people you can take in a cab to 4 awkwardly, whereas in my car it is 5 and not awkward.
