Tesla will stop making the Cybertruck next year, according to CEO Elon Musk, who said on X that the company will use the factory space to build more two-seater Cybercab robotaxis.

The decision to wind down the futuristic, steel-clad EV comes after just a few short years of underwhelming sales. When Musk handed over the first few Cybertrucks in late 2023, he predicted Tesla would sell around 250,000 per year. It was supposed to be such a cornerstone of Tesla’s future that, before construction began, the company talked about its Texas factory as the “Cybertruck factory.” But Tesla has instead sold just tens of thousands — total — over the last three years.

It feels like there’s a big gap between the cab and the y. Would a self driving 3 (which can fit 5 people and they already have factories to build 90%+ of) not make way more sense?

They built more capacity for the Y as it’s a better selling vehicle, and if you already have a small car for the 1 and 2 people trips, using something bigger with more storage for the 3-5 people trips does make sense. I’m sure 3s will eventually end up in it though even if it’s just a way to balance factory output. Like if the 3 is selling less in a quarter and the factory is idling more, maybe adding some 3s to the robotaxi fleet instead of y’s that quarter begins to make sense?

And the model y can also do two people.

So again, why focus so hard on a two seater?

The Model Y costs substantially more to build, is more complicated to repair and costs more to run per mile.

When only 1/5 rides need that, it’s cheaper to mass produce something else. The plan is to make millions of these.

Yeah, right when they start to use their robots on the SpaceX Mars base.

I mean you don’t need to believe it’s going to happen, they only needed to believe while planning things and the impacts it would have on their decisions.
