Not recent, but I spent the majority of my teenage years dealing with awfully frizzy and unmanageable hair because I was shampooing daily (also using an excessive amount). I was under the impression that you need to thoroughly shampoo all oils away every time you shower in order to be “clean.” When I moved to university and no longer had parents around to tell me that I stink, my hygiene standards became more… relaxed, but I was surprised that my hair was a lot healthier!

I started looking up basic stuff after I saw a video of that guy who would shit in his hand in the bathroom and thought that was normal.

Turns out I was brushing my teeth backwards, you’re supposed to use mouthwash, then floss, then brush, and don’t spit.

Not too long ago I learned that you’re not supposed to rinse your mouth out after brushing your teeth, but instead just spit out the toothpaste. Apparently you’re supposed to leave a coating of it on your teeth for it to work properly.

As a kid I learned from the dentist that you should massage your gums with the toothbrush. I’ve recently learned that you should absolutely not and this is why I have retracted gums and exposed roots that hurt like a motherfucker.

Childhood dentist that is probably long dead, I wish you bad thoughts wherever you are.

Nobody told me you were supposed to scrape/scrub your tongue when brushing your teeth… and nobody told me about washcloths either. 🫣 My wife put me on to that about a decade ago (so, in my early twenties) so by now it’s just part of my life but yeah…

Walking in general. Physical therapy both sucks super hard and is vastly improving my life. I’ve had a decades long back injury caused by a dog attack, but I’ve apparently been walking in a way that guards a wound not entirely there.

    Thank you PT.

    FUCK you PT.

I learned that you should roll up a period pad and use the wrapper of the new pad to hold it rolled closed. They have a little tape and it reduces mess and smell.

In my defense, I didn’t use pads until last year.

going from pads / tampons to the silicone cup was my learning a better way. First week was rough but by the end of the week and thereafter I couldn’t even feel it once it was in. Went to fuck a few times and the dude was like TF is this? And I’d be like oh shit lemme swap it for a disc real quick.

Neither way is wrong. I will often give the stem end a quick test and if it breaks and starts the peel, I peel from that end. If it doesn’t, I start at the other end. Both work just fine.

I tried this out a while back and tbh it’s hard to open on the non stem side for me. I will continue to use the stem side as it provides more leverage.

Swallowing pills. A friend pointed out that tilting your head down helps with swallowing and I had never thought about it before. It really does make it easier!

If it’s a floating pill like a capsule tilting your head down helps a lot, but if it’s a pill that sinks and sticks to your tongue tipping your head back can help

The trick for me is to sort of toss the pill up into the water in my mouth. Do it a few times and you’ll feel it go out of contact with your tongue.

Once that happens, swallow and it will be like you didn’t take anything at all.

I just tale a bite og food and let the pills go down with that once chewed.

Add the pills just before swallowing

Putting my T-shirts in the drawer. Historically, I did this via flat stacking, like pizza boxes. It’s much easier to find a specific T-shirt if you arrange them in the drawer like hanging file folders. Also allows you to pack in more of them.

I’ve gotten into the habit of doing my underwear this way - fly on the front, fold in half inward, then roll from the bottom. Details don’t matter on that except I always make sure they’re not inside-out as well. I get dressed in the dark (well, very dim) as my dialysis 3x per week is very early, so I get dressed in the near dark so as not to wake my wife. Underwear gets unrolled and unfolded and even in the near dark I know what orientation it’s in. heh.

Yep, same method. May as well mention I only have one primary sock type, so it all gets thrown loose into a smaller drawer. No matching required. That made a sizable dent in the executive disfunction of putting away laundry. But apparently not everyone can commit to that lifestyle of one sock style

This was a huge discovery for me as well when reading the Marie Kondo book. I try to store everything in an accessible way now, though some things are easier than others. I gave up on folding my socks though. They just get tossed in a box.

The trick to socks is to have lots that are the same or alternativly to stop caring if your socks don’t match. I have gone the first route and my SO has gone the other. We’re both pretty content with our own methods.

Cleaning cast iron. I used to add water cold and bring to a boil. Now I heat first until grease is almost smoking, then add a bit of water and let it steam and sputter itself clean.

Depends on how stuck things get. I do a lot of blackening of meat which tends to leave dry cooked bits on the pan which don’t wash out so easy.

Nothing that fancy. Just getting a good char. But the pan dries out everywhere not touching meat, so bits get caked on a bit.

I have a solid plastic scraper that has never let me down. Doesn’t matter what I cook in it, how much blackened meat gets stuck, or how long I neglect it in the stove top before washing it, I run it under hot water, hit it with the scraper, then the abrasive side of my sponge, then the soft side. After, I towel dry it, put it in the stove top to evaporate left over moisture, then rub a thin layer of oil on it.

I have one of those too, but I usually don’t need it with the heat and steam method. Most of the stuck-on foodstuff comes off with just a spray from the faucet. No need to even scrub.
