But seriously what kind of predatory policy is that in the first place?

As an European, the “you can’t close your account too fast, this process is mandatory” thing would be a one way to a trial.

This is super clever. I cannot believe this never occurred to me, and I discovered it in a Lemmy ‘shitpost’ no less.

Let’s keep up the memes and shitposts in this category!

What country is “you can’t close your account unless you go 90 days without using it first” legal in?

One tactic on social media is to delete as much as you can, change all your profile data so it’s bogus, and retroactively revise as much of your comment history so that it’s meaningless, such as NSA haikus.

That way the account may not be closed, but it’s toxic. It will poison algorithm analyis, your consumer profile and AI scraping.

The Escapist refused to let me close my account in the early 2010s. So I did this.

This looks like a gambling app. So it’s not that you can’t close it until it’s not used. Voluntary exclusion is a mandatory policy required by legislation so a gambling addict can ask a casino to functionally ban them. This app is extra predatory in that they don’t allow a permanent ban right away. Their goal is to make it take multiple requests so an addict can relapse and spend more money and it’s the addicts fault.

its called “laxed regulation for dubious reasons”. happens all the time because government officials should probably wear F1 gear with all their sponsor logos slapped on them.

I started dipping into watching regular cable again since we have it at the moment bundled with our internet, and man the commercials are bleak now. It’s all weight loss medication, depression medication, and gambling apps.

The programming is pretty fucking bleak, too. My elderly parents have cable TV and I try to watch it sometimes to entertain myself while I’m taking care of them, and I can’t find a fucking thing worth watching despite them having 500 channels or so. I always end up watching Beat Bobby Flay on the Food Channel and I can’t stand that fucking show.

Hahahaha yeah I’m there with you on the Beat Bobby Flay. I end up watching that or like Storage Wars, occasionally I’ll catch Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. But mostly it’s a lot of shit I wouldn’t have wanted to watch back when cable was the standard.

And my viewing habits have just changed so much that even if something is on that I would watch, I already have access to it elsewhere so I’d rather not watch it on cable.

Jeopardy just depresses me now. I used to think I could have at least competed on the show, but for the last 20 years or so I’ve been completely disconnected from pop culture and I could never hope to answer that type of question. I also miss Trebek, god damn it. Ken Jennings is alright but it’s not just the same.

But seriously what kind of predatory policy is that in the first place?

    It’s a gambling site.

Gambling is inherently predatory. It’s addictive. Gambling sites prey on this addiction. They’re not gonna let you go so easily. The wait period is to see if you’re really one of their best customers, unable to go cold-turkey.

If you’re an addict, gambling will prey on you.

Also, OnlyFans will prey on you. Doordash will prey on you. Clash of Clans will prey on you. The stock market will prey on you. Your church will prey on you.

You have two choices. Control yourself (only you can do it) or be a sucker

How does onlyfans prey on you exactly? Perhaps for some people it does but I feel the porn addiction thing is pretty overblown. I don’t doubt some have it but the internet will have you think everyone who watches porn is an addict.

        I think they’re referencing the app/engagement model.

Being pornography is… tangential, sort of. But part of what makes OF and all those other services so addictive is the way they’re structured. Living on your phone, pinging you, targeted personalized offers, FOMO, and engineering the app to form parasocial relationships in particular.

That’s different than randomly watching porn on the Internet, IMO.

One other common factor is the “primal” addictiveness hook, e.g. gambling, food craving, or the draw of porn.
