Just blocked lemmy.ml from my Lemmy account, and I swear to god it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done on this platform. My homepage feels actually clean now.
For the past few months I’d been seeing a lot of tankie posting and pretty much far-left propaganda on my feed. It got tiring enough that I finally checked my blocked-user list, and realized pretty much everyone I’d blocked was from lemmy.ml. So I just blocked the whole instance instead.
Saying this as someone who considers themselves a leftist: I used to think Lemmy itself was an echo chamber. Turns out lemmy.ml was the problem the entire time. Probably the reason I tolerated it for so long is that I agreed with a lot of what they posted, but like an oversaturated meme, I’d had enough. Browsing the platform was starting to feel way too tiring instead of fun, which defeats the point of being here in the first place.
The breaking point was seeing some dude post a “meme” implying North Korea and China are basically communist utopias and that the West sucks. I mean, the West does suck, but come on - you’re saying North Korea is the ideal the West should strive for? What the hell…
I just switch to my subscribed instances when I get tired of All.
I’m giving this a try.
Not sure if it’s my issue, because I don’t really see much pro-China / pro-Russia crap. But I am exhausted by the nonstop extreme left groupthink.
Same goes for any sub - that’s what the Block feature is for, folks. Not necessarily to insulate yourself from different points of view - some subs are just the same shit over and over.
I wouldn’t need a “clean” front page because I don’t feel threatened by people having different opinions than me. I wish you good luck with your clean front page and clean mind. Hopefully you can find some peace now.
really, sounds like you shouldn’t be running an ad blocker or any of that stuff then. because you don’t need a clean internet, it’s good to view the web saturated with ads trying to sell you shit you don’t want or need.
Also, you should only read books that you aren’t interested in or that you hate. Because what is the point of reading if you aren’t making yourself miserable while doing so?
Hmm interesting that you found yourself stumbling through so many logical fallacies in order to craft an argument. Are the tankies trying to sell you something?
Yes, you should probably read books that are outside of your confort zone.
If you hate people from .ml or they make you feel uncomfortable or upset, yea go ahead block them. You’re both the one with the problem and the one who has the tools to solve the problem. So go ahead and make things really clean for yourself. I don’t want you to catch any cooties.
I hate bullies, yeah. Your entire post here is typical .ml user trope.
Call something a logical fallacy, posture yourself as superior, then insult the user and try to goad them into a name-calling, so you can play the victim.
It’s proverbial crybully behaviour. please also include a DM about how you are going to beat me up, while you’re at it. because threatening people is very logical and aware and I should be glad to be beaten by you.
Because you know, we just need to re-educate the population in physical labor camps, and THEN they will finally understnad the glory of marxism leninism and the freedom it will bring to everyone!
It was a logical fallacy lol. If you think I was posturing as superior, that’s a feeling that came from within your heart.
You can’t just spit out nonsense and act like you made a good point. If you feel that our interaction is similar to how you interact with users from .ml, it’s likely that you are just someone who gets deep into conflict with other users very easily and is constantly making bad faith arguments in an attempt to “win” the internet.
No is fucking cyberbullying you lmao. I am not an .ml user and don’t have an agenda. No one had threatened anyone. This is actually hilarious. You can’t accuse people of pointing out that you argue with logical fallacies, and then go on this entire straw-man rant about how you’re being threatened and bullied. That literally didn’t happen. Nothing like that happened.
Even more hilarious that you are saying that I am trying to make myself a victim, and then accusing me of threatening you and cyberbullying you. You can’t make this stuff up. lol.
You don’t hate bullies, you hate it when people you are trying to bully with bad faith arguments argue back.
Looking at your profile, you are currently engaged in like 6 different bad faith arguments with other users. You literally cannot interact with people in any way other than getting into negative interactions with them. You must feel absolutely exhausted. You think you’re fighting some sort of holy war against the communists? Go ride a fucking bike or go for a walk or something. Geez. lol. Social media seems to have scrambled your mind, consumed by negativity. You are bullying yourself.
Amen brother.
There are a few instances where like 90% of the problematic content and users come from. Blocking them makes the fediverse FAR more enjoyable and pleasant. And reduces the harassment and violent content by 90%
Sane leftists need to shut out the insane ones. Those folks dont’ care about politics in any actionable way. All they care about is feeling superior to everyone else based on their theoretical beliefs and their weird cult of worship they have created with facts don’t matter and alternative history is the truth.
I’m currently debating with myself whether to block sh.itjust.works next, because it seems to be becoming another hotbed of bad actors who are here to be purely negative and hostile to other users and push extremist content, and if you counter point them they just harass the shit out of you and follow you around across various communities.
in fact a lot of folks i blocked on other instances are now posting from that instance under the same username. seems like some folks just keep swapping instances once enough folks have blocked them on another instance for their harassment and horrible posts.
Hey, do what you want. I don’t blame anyone blocking an instance any more than blocking US news. You’ll miss out on seeing witchy memes tho.
i’m fundamentally at odds with new age religious movements, like wiccanism. especially because the cast themselves as original and profound, when they are most often a repackaging of the selfishness is self-fulfillment ethos and engage in magical thinking as a solution to pragmatic problems… rather than just solving the problem by taking direct action.
witchdom stuff has the same energy to me as Goop, in that it’s legit late stage capitalism kitsch. but i understand its appeal as an escape mechanism.
I guess it depends on what flavor of witchdom. I definitely understand where you are coming from, and agree almost all is centered around helping the individual feel/be less confined by the pragmatic and concrete. At the same time, I find being unbound and abstract places me in the right headspace to consider philosophical and psychological ideas with greater satisfaction and complexity. Hermetic Alchemy in particular likes to blend the physical with the spiritual.
I’m curious. Do you have the same at odds relationship with common religions, and is it more of less contentious than with these newer movements?
Shut up Yank. Idk about NK but id live 1000 lives in China than let 1 second in the US sully my soul for eternity.
I ain’t american you fucking asshole
Yet your spirit reeks of it. EW!
You’re bigoted. Ty for wearing it openly. Why do you hate people for the ground they walk on?
Thanks for recommending lemmy.ml 🚩
When everything is extreme and far right, any attempt to common sense will seem far far to the left.
and when the vast majority of the population is in the middle, and you’re on the extreme, you’ll think they are against you.
when what they really think is you are weird and annoying and you should shut up because you’re talking about shit that nobody wants or even cares about.
JFC.
I use Lemmy.world. I don’t see any of this drama, about cat food or leftists. I do see posts that used to be regular at Reddit, with decent discussion.
I have never noticed any problem with lemmy.ml.
Block all the low-quality meme/image content if lemmy feels tiring. Stop consuming garbage.
ML is not far-left, it pretends to be in order to spread pro-Putin, pro-Russian, and pro-Republican state propaganda because they know it’s destroying America. ML and Russia are about as socialist as the Nazis claimed to be.
Pro russia propaganda is generally contained in ml own communities. The tiresome thing for me is zionist tolerant instances and communities and fake palestinians supporter who both side the colonizers and the colonized or defend rhe democrats support for the colonizers
No I seem them regularly spreading pro russian propaganda and demeaning jabs against ukrainans in .world communities. The instance has to many disgusting users for it to be waved away with the “few bad apples” defense
My argument was not to say that there is only few bad apples on the ml just that in my experience I don’t see their propaganda that much often outside of their bubble
Fair enough. I seem to notice them pushing it everywhere.
I think Lemmy is radicalizing.
It’s not just Lemmy.ml either. I used to love dbz0, almost switched from lemmy.world, but now all the non-political content is withering away, and most of what I see is just absolutist, anarchist post. The admin is fine with explicit calls to violence against pretty much anyone.
And that’s fine. It’s their instance, they can their thing. But it’s so extreme I don’t even find satisfaction interacting with the instance anymore, like it’s a single community with one topic.
And I don’t mean to single them out. I have similar feelings from many instances, including Lemmy.world.
I’ve even seen some pretty extreme stuff on blajah, which I used to picture as a wholesome LGBTQ+ instance! Which I adore… until it’s not so wholesome.
What’s worse, Lemmy users don’t seem to care.
I’ll point out some off-topic discussion in a thread, and I just get piled on. Like, not every single Lemmy conversation has to involve statements about western imperialism or the futility of democracy or whatever, but apparently it does on Lemmy.ml, and it feels like it’s spreading.
That was more of a rant than I intended.
But I am concerned about this new internet place I like. I’ve seen one or two other Reddit clones wither away from political radicalization, too.
yep, this is exactly why i have blocked those instances myself.
i’m not an extremist. i don’t hate everyone who is different than me, etc. and i don’t want to interact with folks who think that way or promote content that pushes hate and rage and self-victimhood. according to a lot of folks on those instances, that viewpoint means I’m a fascist capitalist Nazi who want to murder them implicitly… because anyone who isn’t with them, is against them.
and yeah i didn’t block them 2 years ago, but over time that stuff kept getting worse and worse and more prevalence and the users from the instances kept drive-by commenting and sending me messages taht were pure vitriol and hate.
there is no ‘winning’ by viewing those types of folks or the content they post on lemmy. so blocking is really the best way to improve your experience.
i’m just here to like, relive old reddit when it was funny and goofy and nerdy. i’m interested in politics, but from a very different place than most political posters here are, and I get demonized for like… wanting to promote understanding and find common ground. but i’m clearly a big centrist fascist bootlicker, or something.
I can see where you’re coming from. At this point I’m not interested in engaging with content that has a negative impact on my mental health, even if I support those views. There’s some extent of irony in this behavior, but I’m just tired of being constantly bombarded with reminders of our sad world. I don’t use typical social media, and every once in a while when I catch a whiff of a friend’s Tiktok or Instagram feed, I’m completely blown away by how much content there is designed to trigger a negative, or often an angry reaction. This was a big reason for me to leave Reddit and I’m trying to avoid this as much as possible on Lemmy.
I’m still very new here and still trying to figure this whole fediverse thing out, I’ve only been here for about a month, give or take. Like some other user suggested were common for newbies to Lemmy, I chose the most active instance without really thinking about it, and always scroll through /All. During my short experience here, I have blocked so, so many communities and instances already. Blahaj is one of them, not because I disagree with the importance or need to stand up for LGTQ+ rights, but because I feel that the general content posted there is naturally based on a politically driven agenda, which again is all fine, but I browse this shit before bed to escape my already constant anxiety, and I’m here for memes and a good time. I’m not interested in content that is either dystopian doomerism, American circus politics, war reports, or what ever depressing reminders of our current speedrun to degrade human life, in basically all categories.
I get that people are actively frustrated, angry, in need to vent, or in need of other’s to help them feel less alone, that they’re not the only ones who think the world is losing their minds. This space is perfect for people to discuss those things, to find likeminded people and even challenge their believes from other’s opinions. But that’s not what I’m looking for. I could just make it easy for myself and sub to the lighthearted communities that fits to my need and just scroll through that instead, but I enjoy the random posts from communities I wouldn’t find unless I was scrolling through /All, like this post for example.
Instead, I just block everything that has a negative reaction that makes me chose to engage in that content from my side. Like another news article about Musk posting something dumb on Twitter once again, for example. If I read the title and want to click the post to read more, I stop to ask myself if feel that if the reason to want to read more stems from anger or frustration, if it does I try to move on. Not because I feel that the topic shouldn’t be discussed or that it shouldn’t have an angry reaction, but because it’s fucking everywhere already and I’m not trying to feed my depression further. Call it an ostrich behaviour, but it makes my experience a little better.
good news is that the majority of this content is coming from a handful of people. and you can block them and you’ll see a massive reduction in it.
like some of the folks my block lists post 50+ times a day, and are in the comments of their post viciously attacking anyone who dares to question the legitimacy of the content they post, calling them names and often trying to bait them into saying something they can get them banned for. because it’s like… their self-appointed job or something? i have no clue.
i also work in tech and i blocked a ton of the weird linux fetishist stuff, which again, was a few posters and communities who just evangelize non stop everyday about how superior and holy they are for their OS use, and how awful and terrible windows/apple is.
I get that.
That’s part of my motivation too.
My mental state is not great, and I too came here to avoid a manipulative bombardment of ragebait. Hence its frustrating to fund other users reposting it, especially when its misleading or straight up misinformation.
I thought most of us came here to escape that trap, but apparently not.
i have met people in real life who are 100% addicted to it and can’t stop talking about it in person. it’s simple like a way people live now, how they process the entirety of their life everyday.
and they won’t ever see the fault in themselves. they will simple call you names and say you are implicitly supporting the ‘bad side’ in the story if you dare to say maybe it is stupid and rage bait. and yeah, they see it as their mission to ‘educate’ you and everyone else about the ‘truth’ they see that ‘nobody else sees’.
it’s a form of ego-tripping in the end. they feel like they are doing god’s work, and proselytizing the good word of outrage and they must shun the non-believers lest their purity of their rage ever be tested.
I think Lemmy is radicalizing.
Ever since the reddit migration, troll instances who already existed on the fediverse saw a shiny new plaything.
When their home instances became defederated, their users spun up new ones, and were welcomed with open arms under the assumption they were new.
That bought them access to admin channels, were they could socially manipulate legitimate admins of major instances.
People who know controlled relatively large social media platforms…
People who didn’t receive any training and may not have had the best social skills to begin with.
So, what I’m trying to say is, it’s not all that they’re radicalized in the sense that their views changed organically. They’re radicalized like people taken advantage of by FBI informants into “planning” an attack.
The people telling them to do this stupid shit don’t think it’s a good idea, they just want to burn it down to watch it burn.
Just use tesseract and have us all automatically blocked then if we’re all scary radicals. I see you were defending admiral patrick a few weeks ago, surprised you aren’t hiding behind it still. It’s right there for anyone who needs everything sanitized and corporate approved for them.
Leftism and pro LGBTQIA comms are not radical, violent, or terroristic, and trying to suggest they are is going to get you shit on here. It’s by design to keep the fash out. Lemmy is overwhelmingly a leftist space, and most leftists have no problem with telling it how it is, especially during the largest global resurgence in fascism since WWII.
At a certain point, if everyone around you is a problem, maybe you should consider the possibility that the source of your discomfort is much more localized.
Stop acting like being on that list was exclusive to any demographic.
I’m on that and I’ve been called every political label under the sun as an insult on here.
Wasn’t the point being made, but go off king 👍
I was not defending the tesseract dev, what they did is inexcusable. That app can burn.
I sympathized with them some, though. I get what they were trying to do in their head, on some level.
If you think the more extreme parts of Lemmy are representative of “everyone around you,” as in the larger public in my life, I don’t even know where to begin with that. We live in different worlds I guess.
Correct, I don’t surround myself with Enlightened Centrists© who think a little fascism is okay as a treat.
If you think being left of Newsom and supporting marginalized communities is extremism, you don’t belong here, simple as. None of us will miss you when you go back to reddit and twitter.
I don’t know why you’re being so thorny.
And why would I ever got back to Twitter or Reddit? They’re cesspools. What would make you think I’d ever touch them?
…This is exactly what I’m talking about. Its like if I don’t pass a political purity test, if I am not X level of explicit or hostile in every single post, I’m the enemy. Because apparently I’m not good enough for lemmy.
But what are your thoughts on western imperialism and the futility of democracy?
;-)
Okay just block them, and block everything else you dont want to see, idk yeah theyre a bunch of crazy wannabe communists, i agree we all agree, just block and move on, like what else is there? Doxx them? That makes no sense, right?
it’s crazy people who are butthurt ivan drago lost in rocky iv, they’re not worth your attention – quite frankly this couldn’t be a better advertisement for lemmy.mi or whatever it is. So i guess that’s my rant, stop reacting with content you don’t like. If something real and local to your geography is happening, yes, go to a protest, volunteer helping underserved communities. But if it’s on freaking social media (federated or otherwise) just block and move on, dont feed into it. We don’t even know what corner of the world they actually live in. Think about all the horrible people in the world in positions of power – they all get tons of negative attention online and they harness that negative attention into real-world benefits for them.
I can.
But as some point I worry about the health of the community.
I don’t want to invest my time in platform that shrinks into a one-topic pit. Been down that rabbit hole before.
…To be clear, I think Lemmy is okay now, but I worry about the trajectory.
It’s FOSS, it’s a federation, like yes crazy people will make instances full of crazy stuff and you block/defederate them. Idk, like it’s part of the thought process behind it, like im sure literal genocidal dictators host a couple instances we probably never heard of. That was always the answer on day 1 of a free and open social network, crazies are free to join like everyone else and they get blocked, what other system would be better?
The structure is important, too. That ultimately colors the community, no matter how “free” it is.
I think Lemmy mirrored Reddit a little too closely. For instance, feeds are structured in a way so that popular and “ragebait” communities rise over niche interest ones, and starve the latter.
Piefed is better, and getting better, though. In some ways.
