Red dirt country is our Jazz. It’s country but not 24/7 my wife left me for my dog while driving my truck.

Whiskey Myers- Broken window serenade is a song about watching someone deal with a loved one on meth.

Tejon street corner thieves- blue lives murder. Goes ham on cops for killing folks. They also got a song called “oh my god” which has helped me deal with finding out my ma has stage 4 blood and lung cancer.

Amigo the devil has lots of deep songs that gives me white folks jazz/blues. One is called cocaine and abel. Another one I really feel in my heart is stronger than dead.

Sorry to go on rant. I love sharing music I listen to.

I had to go back and look to see if I wrote this comment.

Alt-country and dark Americana are my jam. Whiskey Myers is from my neck of the woods and actually calls out the titty bar that was down the street from where I worked (I passed that thing at least 10 times a week) in Broken Window Serenade. Used to go watch them play local shows in the late 00s and early 10s before I moved to Houston. They are all pretty good guys.

I feel like a few weeks ago I called out Cocaine and Abel as being one of the saddest songs I know somewhere on Lemmy.

I’ll also say that smack gave us a lot of grunge music.

My former boss, when I did flooring, listened to Myers. The song stone, I think it was, had me hooked.

Then from there The Dead South- in hell I’ll be in good company, which sent me to The White Buffalo, and then from there a deep rabbit hole.

I love knowing music of different walks of life. My pandora will go from Matchbox20 and Goo goo dolls, to Lamb of God, Spark Master Tape, Tupac, pretty much everything.

I actually started listening to rap when I was alot younger and a dumb bigot. My ma taught me to learn what songs were about. Which I did with the rap songs, which in turn helped me grow past my racism and realize how fucked the world is and that the color of my brother’s skin doesn’t matter.

I think that you and I could have been very good friends in real life. I went through my bigotry phase because it was just everywhere around me. Escaped through music and food. A playlist that goes from Sabbath to AIC to Mark Lanegan to Black Pistol Fire to 21 Savage to BigXthaPlug to Whiskey Myers to Amigo the Devil. And that just scratches the surface. That doesn’t even get into the 1920s folk blues or 50s jazz and soul. Pretty much the only thing I won’t listen to is Nashville country.

That’s awesome. Ya, that’s how it was for me. That and talking to folks on forums that were more liberal. It’s funny how much we can change when we don’t put ourselves in boxes.

Jazz? I been trying to get into that, haven’t found what I like. You know Cowboy bebop? I don’t know if the intro song counts as jazz, but I think I’m leaning more to liking that. Especially for gaming. I’ve been listening to it when playing bf6, seems I can focus better.

And ya, Nashville country…eh…I like a few, mainly cause it was a song I heard growing up, but definitely wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to. My dad was the type to listen to that really really old country music. Bleh! I mean, it’s okay just not my taste.

I do know Cowboy Bebop haha. And yeah, that’s definitely jazz. But I listen to a lot of older jazz. Ella Fitzgerald has been one of my favorites since I was a kid and I really dig a lot of Coltrane. Louis Armstrong. I like a lot of the slow lovey songs and a lot of the sad ones. It’s the opposite of what I like in rock hahaha.

I do like old Bakersfield country. Buck Owens, Emmylou Harris, Merle Haggard, and those guys. You can draw a line from them to outlaw country to Alt country. And from them to a lot of Southern Rock, roots, and swamp rock.

I could talk about this all day haha

“Red dirt” specifically refers to a region straddling the Red River, including parts of Oklahoma and Texas. The soil in the region is actually red. But the musical area is much larger than the geological area.

Not at all, if you have taste in music, you find great music in all genres. Great music is great, no matter what broad categories it is defined by. “Jazz” covers an astoundingly vast spread of sounds and feelings. If you enjoy music for the sensation of music, Jazz is just one of the many, many places that you will find that joy.

Taste in music doesn’t require finding value in every genre…the ego on these jazz fans, my god.

If you don’t like or don’t want to explore music, that’s your prerogative. It’s a hobby and a skill you can build like anything else.

You could have the one pop, country, or metal song/artist you enjoy and not branch out, it’s perfectly valid, but if you like the sound of a particular song or genre there are many songs in other genres that will have the same vibe. It’s just up to you to explore.

I think part of the problem here is that a “genre” is a vague, idiosyncratic definition that overlaps with every other so-called genre.

Jazz gave birth to hiphop, rap, r&b, techno, classic rock and roll and a hundred other genres. It is a clash of black, latine, and working class white history and passion.

It also evolved parallel to samba, bossa nova, blues, and other dissonance and rhythm based genres.

Taste is subjective but jazz is for sure a HUGE qualifier towards taste and from it have arisen thousands of subgenres which hundreds of millions of people enjoy.

What nonsense is this? Jazz influenced those but so did other genres, none of them “gave birth” to them.
