                  So, the closest thing I’ve had to a childhood hero is Spock from the 60s Star Trek show. As I’ve grown older and more aware of of the world around me, I’ve realized elevating rationality to a virtue by itself isn’t enough to form a coherent ethos. In fact, I think individuals are actually very bad at rationality. Everyone who puts rationality on a pedestal, from Zizians to SBF to Reddit atheists to Elon Musk to Randian libertarians, is really just forgetting how subjective rationality can be.

                  I firmly believe that compassion is just as important as rationality when it comes to building strong, honest societies. You need both. We want ethics that are internally consistent, sure, but rationality and internal consistency don’t themselves give ethics purpose.

              Putting aside the discussion about bodies and objects, the primary concern is consent - which also applies to objects anyway. Would you steal a dead person’s wallet “because they don’t need it anymore”?

            Objects can’t consent at all and they never could, permission from an object to act on it sounds exactly like why the right think the left has gone crazy.

              What do you mean never? When they were alive they could consent. Why does that change when they die? Just because someone is incapacitated through death, doesn’t give us the right to rape them. When consent is not given it is presumed you don’t have it.

                When alive, the body was a person. They are not incapacitated through death, they dead. Gone. The person ceases to be and only the object and memories remain.

              And calling people objects is why the right is crazy.

              If a person drowns and has no heartbeat, is it okay for you to have a quickie with them before the paramedics arrive to save him? Clinically they’re dead, so… by your logic, they’re an object, and never had the ability to consent in the first place, so quickly fucking them up the arse should be a-okay, right?

              Or is there like a timer you have for when a person goes from a person to an object, which then retroactively never had personhood anyway? Is it just time, or is it temperature, or as soon as the smell sets in? Some people have been clinically dead for half an hour in cold water before being resuscitated, the cold helping protect from brain damage. And some people smell like dead bodies while alive.

              I’m just curious as to your personal criteria.

                The object never has agency. The person does. This edge case is a fine one, but only suggests that the person is dormant, not gone, and can be returned to life. If a body is in a morgue for a week, that ain’t going to be a possibility.

      Have you smelled a body in decomposition before (basically all of them are in some stage of decomp)?

        well now I’m upset I haven’t smelled a body in decomposition before ☹️ (if there is a God, I hope he prints this off and confronts me with this when I die)

        but I assume a morgue preserves the corpse well enough that I don’t think it will be too much of an issue

        now that you say it, I have smelled decomposing animal bodies before many times - but maybe not a human corpse 🤔

        In the early stages there are a lot of fecal smells.

        I would be very interested in being a pathologist or dealing with corpses, I think I’m better suited to that work than the average person - however, a lot of that work involves court testimony and working with the government, and I’m just not interested in having a job where public testimony is a major part of it or where I’m involved in the “justice system” (mostly because of the corruption and the feeling that my job would put me in morally compromised positions, and I just couldn’t handle that).

      I had an ex who worked in this field, she went to mortuary school and worked in mortuaries, before that she worked in organ transplant. She went into the field because of a combination of personal tragedy (a close one passing away at an early age) and seeing how delicately the mortuary handled the event.

      Anyhow, she and I would talk about it often. One of the things she would note on, wasn’t that it was sexual based things men would do (besides general office sexism coming from men on occasion), but more about the level of respect they showed the deceased. Crude Comments they’d make about their weight, features etc…

      So I think it just depends and it would be difficult to verify these other claims because the “victims” are deceased and most things related to it seem to be anecdotal.

      I’m also not going to google necro in anyway

      (Also yes, she was kinda emo/metal an had some pretty sick tattoos)

        I sure wish I’d had this experience with the funeral home I picked out when my dad died. I called them to arrange to pick up his body, and the answering service was AI and obviously so. I gave them his name and the voice read it back to me to confirm it as “Robert common name R-O-B-E-R-T, Smith common name S-M-I-T-H”. Then the owner ghosted me for more than a week and only delivered the urn with the ashes in the night before the internment at 8:00, left it outside and split before I could talk to him. 8 grand well spent.

      Shitty pay, crappy hours, being surrounded by the dead all the time… You either gotta love the job or end up loving the dead…

      Some jobs need to be done, but who’s to do them? Can one be completely sane and handle this kind of life without issue for years on end? Most of the people employed tell themselves it’s just a job and spend their time dodging the reality of handling the dead all the time, but a few… well… they go all in.

      Normal is a state of mind that has us come to grips with that which is beyond our control.

      I’m guessing it’s hard to come by reliable stats. It’s on the same level as priests abusing children, the cover-up would be extensive. But, it’s even harder, because the corpse can’t testify in court, or make a YouTube video.
