There are studies that put that number anywhere between .5-13g our capsaicin for a 150lb person where pure capsaicin is 15 million Scoville. The chip challenge is not pure capsaicin and is 1.7 million Scoville.

Certain challenges make you sign a waiver, but that is just because restaurants don’t want a customer attempting to claim that the restaurant is somehow liable for ambulance costs if someone feels too uncomfortable. Since the inception of the country, there has never been a need to regulate spicy food. The FDA exists and has not made guidelines that limit access to spicy products. If they did, there would be very large protests. It would be an issue for many different cultures, which allow their children to eat spicy from infancy upwards. I remember my first hot pepper. Spicy food is part of many ethnic identities. You can’t just throw up the gauntlet because one kid has died in the thousands of years that spicy has been a thing. That kid had some other issues at play. The chip hurts, but it doesn’t kill. The fact that he felt better later on and then lost consciousness screams that this uncovered something else that could have been triggered under many other circumstances, but the chip provided the lynch pin stress.

To ballpark using their numbers, you can put it somewhere at around 400-500 hospitalizations for extremely adverse events with a portion of that being deaths or seriously messing the person up permanently, such as a portion of the stroke victims or some of the kids with myocarditis. It sounds like the thing people are in agreement on is for the most at risk to get it. Basically, experts in the field are weighing-in and there is a media bias to write-off even the good ones that don’t agree entirely with the government/corporate narrative. In many respects, this is a profit push. We could save .003% of the population from hospital visits in other contexts without putting 500 people at great risk. For $130 an American, you could do a lot. You could give everyone a heart monitor. You could provide mats for slippery areas around the house or provide driveway salt for the winter, etc. The reason that this is getting attention still is because of the money.

You are correct, however the purpose of the message is moreso to keep China from undercutting us on their goods and materials exported. Their government tends to help drive down the price of good sold in order to inflict harm on other country’s businesses in the same sector. It is hard to sustain a company if all your customers can get your product for artificially cheaper in China. The best way to address this is to remind China that we are customers of their businesses as well and that they would stand to lose more by not playing fairly. If we just told them to go fuck themselves and set excessive embargo taxes on their imports, which Trump did, it had a negative impact on every industry within each respective supply chain. It takes time to build new resource pipelines. Ideally, we need to have multiple sources.
