They need a scapegoat so they know if they say “low wind and unexpected thermal outaged”, they know people are too stupid to realize they’re saying its NG and/or coal plants playing a large role in the shortfalls and that centralized power NG/coal/nuclear power plants also have unpredictable swings in power (sometimes a 2-3 GW on/off if a large plant shuts down). Yet you can look at the comments on ERCOT to find plenty of people blaming renewables and saying we need to build more of those power stations that failed us in the winter storm in 2021 and have be causing issues this summer as well.

I feel like I still see people complain about modern refrigerants being less good because environmentalists banning the old ones on rare occasions.

No surprise 2020 was the previous record with how active that Atlantic tropical storm season was. Guessing 2005 is up there on the list too.

That’s 15MW for 4 hours. Typical period of tight conditions is probably more like 1 hour, so 4 hour capacity is overkill for what Texas has been going though this summer). You could get more capacity for a 2 hour period. I think Texas peak power demand was about 100GW (I think that excludes some parts of Texas that aren’t part of the Texas grid at the East and West ends)

Not exactly, but during the covid pandemic prices dropped and our lease was coming up for renewal and they wanted the standard 2-3% increase anyways. We ask them to lower it and they said corporate doesn’t let them do it. So we gave 2 months notice and waited for our unit to appear on the website and started a new lease. Technically, there was a 2 week period between the leases, but we just bickered with them until they said we could stay, and they even charged us at the new lower lease rate for those 2 weeks. I think we saved like 20% a month compared to our original lease?

Sure, but I don’t know how much that would matter. In the short-term, batteries might be a viable solution, but $31million would get you about a ~15MW storage system from my understanding, which is about 1 order of magnitude too small to be more than a rounding error and 2 orders of magnitude off from being a fix. Also, electric companies profit off of cryptominers (which theoretically could be used to improve the grid) and ERCOT sees them as a flexible demand that can be turned off in emergencies (at the cost of money).

They also built much of the solar in one region instead of diversifying. So even when other places are under fire-weather watch from high winds, we can have low wind energy because of low winds where they’re built…

Fair. If a grid was just powered by batteries, solar, wind, and existing nuclear plants, which would be the most effective to turn off when demand is too low?

It can provide a baseload though where solar can provide extra power during the heat for places where the summer and days are the power intensive part, rather than winter and nights. You still need a short-term stop gap as the sun sets but it’s still hot out, but even if that was just powered by NG it would be a huge step forward. Adding greener energy storage options to store extra power nuclear or wind could generate overnight would be better.

Btw, could a small percent of nuclear reactors be turned on/off seasonally, potentially transporting fuel between the north in the winter and the south in the summer?

If the cost was actually enough to store the CO2 they emit (and offset the other environmental damages from the sequestration), then it would be fine. But it would be so costly for some industries, that positive PR wouldn’t offset the cost.

What does puberty have to do with the topic? Should we wait til puberty to teach people that the flu or covid exists? It’s a topic connected to many deaths, so surely it’s a mature topic. Otoh, gender is a pretty basic topic parents force onto children, often before the child is even born. Why do we allow such inappropriate behavior towards literal children?

As someone whose had a lesbian non-biological parent and a birther go to the court over our custody in Texas, I’m thankful the judge recognized my mom’s legitimacy as our parent and gave her full custody. But it could have easily turned out differently simply because of the non-biological parent part, but at least her name was on our birth certificates and we had her last name from birth. Can’t imagine it would have turned out the same otherwise despite the other person clearly being totally unfit to raise children.

The politicians acting like this isn’t discrimination that acts against the interests of children are lying or ignorant of the downstream consequences.

Years ago I realized despite liking shows with lots of fights, often those were the parts I paid the least attention to. Think I like the genre because of the built-in breaks for my attention. But I’m also the type who was annoyed when my roommates paid for ad-free service on our livingroom TV because I preferred having them for the purpose of breaks.

Going to the bathroom and sleeping are also normal human behavior, but I’m still not gonna watch a show or movie that shows someone spending 10 minutes on the toilet. Not because I think its gross , but just boring imo. But given I consider myself aroace-spec, I don’t expect my experience to necessarily be representative. And I think those things should be considered more normal in every-day life, rather than something that needs to be hidden, so normalizing it in media is probably a step forward.
