The postwar attitude towards food was somewhat different than ours today. Back then, processed food was seen as a technological marvel, a symbol of man’s mastery over nature. Fortified bread meant your kids could get their essential nutrients. Any kind of vegetable could be found in a can - no more reliance on whatever was in season. Everything a housewife could need was pre-packaged, condensed, powdered, canned, or frozen. Processed food was advertised as tastier, healthier, and easier to prepare. Food companies would publish recipes like this, which were basically just “toss a can of this and a can of that together for an easy meal!”

At my workplace, the response time for text-based messages (eg via Teams) varies wildly. Sometimes I get a response promptly. Sometimes it’s same day, sometimes it’s later that week, and sometimes I don’t get a response at all. So unfortunately the best way to get an answer I need is to just call them. Do I need that information that instant? Not necessarily, but I can’t risk the message being put off/ignored/forgotten for a week or more.

It’s so you don’t have any excuse to ignore me. When I need an answer for something, if I send you an email, you’re going to either lose it in that jungle you call an inbox, or put it aside as “something to get to later” and inevitably forget about it. So I’ll just cut through all that and give you a call directly. If you don’t answer your desk phone, I’ll call your cell phone. I’ll get my answer one way or another, then it’s done. I don’t have to continually pester you with emails or delay things. One and done.

I’ve been getting into collecting vintage hi-fi equipment (1960s and later, though) and this sounds absolutely amazing

I was on this train. Amtrak paid me a settlement not to sue them, but it’s not Amtrak I blame, it’s BNSF, who owns the track. It’s very clear from the camera footage that the track was badly misaligned by the time the train went over it at 80 mph. That line is one of the busiest in the country, and if the freight locomotives (one of which had gone over that section of track barely an hour prior) had some kind of monitoring system, they would have alerted all the other trains to stop or slow down. I used to love riding trains, but our rail infrastructure is much too far behind places like Europe.
