I’ll preface this by saying that this is not taking place in the US but you will find this long read interesting if you don’t have any intolerant or far-right relatives of your own. This is a real person, folks
My sister, who is an absolute nutcase and has featured in many of my posts and comments before… My sister who has said so many racist, homophobic and transphobic things in the past… My sister who has said she’s “neutral on Ukraine vs Russia”, who has said “I hope Trump beats Kamala, cause she’s weird”…
She messaged me yesterday to tell me how she’s mad that there are still so many Republicans in the senate. She wanted the Democrats to win even more seats. She’s mad that “rich people are ripping us all off” and she sees herself as poor when she earns nearly three times the national average. She’s even talking about voting for a green party here that will absolutely raise her taxes, which is hilarious. She has been screaming about how her taxes are too high for years now. We don’t even have progressive tax here… everyone is charged literally the same percentage of tax, no matter their income. She says she wants hers to be lower, because “she works harder and earns more than others”. But, long story short, at her most sane she says she wants everyone to pay the exact same amount because that’s what she thinks is fair. After a little argument about said taxes, I tell her to cool down and block her for a day.
And then today she discovered El-Sayed, and had to tell me about him. Folks, the level of racism that she unleashed in the texts she sent me… fucking gruesome. She’s mad that he’s muslim. She goes on to describe a conservative misogynist muslim. I explain to her that progressive religious folks are very much a real thing and that they even publicly support trans rights. At the sight of the word trans, she goes on a “trans women are still men” rant. Halfway into this insanity she invites me to her birthday party on Saturday. I tell her I am obviously not going to attend. She appears to not even understand what she’s done wrong, or rather shrug it off as unimportant. The argument continues to the point of me calling my mother, who’s there with her while all this is happening(!), to ask her to speak to her daughter, who is obviously having some sort of mental health crisis, cause not a single soul even mentioned these elections to her. No one provoked her at all. She presumably went to TikTok, saw El-Sayed ragebait and went nuts. That went shitty. I lost my temper pretty fucking bad at both of them: my sister for being who she is and my mother for taking her side! I proceeded to then block her again, cause I’m not a masochist.
It absolutely befuddles me how on earth someone can victimize themselves to this level and become so delusional about their wealth and privilege that they would enjoy the Democrats winning an election that was all about the cost of living and about not hurting minorities. She has to be the worst case of voting against your own interests I have ever seen. I’ve frequently told her that her obsession with money, her narcissism and hatred of minorities makes her perfectly compatible with the far-right, and if she has integrity she should take her mask off and show people who she really is. She’s literally voting against her wishes because she knows voting far-right is wrong. But she wishes USA Democrats were like her. And she’s talked herself into thinking that the center-left progressive greens she might vote for want to help her, when they probably see her as the enemy. I mean… thanks for your vote and now shut up forever, I guess…? The last election cycle she voted for a center-right corporation-friendly liberal party, which was at the time literally the only viable pro-EU option for virtually anyone decent. My whole family voted for it. But someone like her voting progressive green is some kind of anomaly scientists will struggle to explain for decades. I hope she does and sees them do thousands of things she hates.
Ok, I need to go rest my fingers now. I think this is the longest comment I’ve ever typed. It’s a decent size blog post. Thanks for saving me a few bucks on therapy. Times are tough.
