ok ignore the image, my brother calls me a foid as a joke and I said we’re gonna get these matching shirts 😭

BUT how is the text on the shirt on the image I downloaded (this) but NOT on the thumbnail when I go to send it to my brother?
I haven’t seen this happen to any other photo I’ve ever downloaded and I’ve uploaded a lot of shitposts on my phone (I have over 300 posts just on Lemmy)
the file said it was just a standard .jpg
this is actually an original feature of jpeg.
back in the day of dialup internet you could embed a smaller thumbnail in the exif data of the jpeg that would load first, faster.
this would allow your website to be “populated” with content but at a lower quality while the full image continued to load in the background.
in the early internet these were even used sometimes to create single play “gifs” that were of a superior quality that gif just couldn’t render.
You edited the image and the embedded thumbnail inside the image exif didn’t get updated.
Image files can contain thumbnail exif data. Basically the thumbnail isn’t created on the fly every time its needed, it’s a second image in the same image file. Some software doesn’t edit that exif data when it edits the image, so you can end up with a mismatch like this.
Try a different image editor
FOID is not part of the picture. It’s a text caption.
