Robinson, 71, has worked at the Post since 1980 and been a columnist since 2005, winning a Pulitzer Prize for his work focused on the election of Barack Obama as the nation’s first Black president in 2008.
In a memo to colleagues reported by The New York Times on Thursday, Robinson said the “significant shift” in the opinion section’s mission had encouraged him that it was time to move on.
Last month, columnist Ruth Marcus, who had worked at the newspaper since 1984, resigned after she said management decided not to run her commentary critical of Bezos’ policy. As the Post has faced turmoil in the past year, it has enforced a policy of not letting its staff members write about internal matters.
In 20 years after all journalists are fired or leave, The Onion will be the only news outlet left.
Giving me the same vibes as:
“You do not realize that Taco Bell was the only restaurant to survive the franchise wars”
What i love about that is, depending on region, it wasn’t Taco Bell
This is what happens when insecure oligarchs own all of the things. Soon there will be no dissenting opinions at all.
Why don’t all these independent journalists just come together and form their own news organization
Because someone has to pay them so they can make a living doing it, and the public are very reluctant to pay for news.
Because every news wants to be “balanced” giving a voice to “both” sides.
News used to be more selective and actually INFORM you about an issue, instead of just letting two sides spew bullshit back and forth.
Every time we complain about the pay walls and (demand that someone) paste the full article text then we’re making journalists beholden to people like Bezos. Wife and I used to subscribe to WaPo and NYT. Now it’s Wired and NYT.
They have. The Intercept, 404 Media, The Breach, etc.
Here’s a list of American and Canadian independent media.
They sorta did… they called it ProPublica. Although they focus on investigative journalism and publish their work through other outlets rather than publishing the news themselves.
It is not like we did not see this coming; a billionaire who controls the narrative.
