  • Some of my BIFL:

I seem to lose Swiss Army Knives before they wear out or break. On my 3rd or 4th one now and trying to hang on to it.

I still have my Atari 2600 from when I was a kid. And many more cartridges than I had before. The CRT I played it on still works too.

Various tools like vice grips, hammers, corded drills, table saw, and circular saw.

Bare and enameled cast iron pots and pans.

Several tents. The oldest one is a Coleman Oasis canvas tent I used growing up. HUGE tent - 12’ at the peak and about 12’x12’.

I don’t plan to keep it for life, but I have a wallet from the Buffalo Billfold Company. Bison and very durable. I think mine is the hipster.

  • I’m probably going to over-answer this as I think “out loud” but here goes anyway.
I’ve never done FB because FB is evil. I did sign up once for just long enough to report some kid for being too young to be on FB but that is all I’ve ever done there. It is pretty tempting to sign up for reals, tho because it would be the best way to reconnect with some people I have lost touch with over the years.

I did Reddit for a while, signed up during early COVID. I’ve been off Reddit for a while now and I do miss some of the smaller more niche communities. But overall, Reddit has changed recently for the worse. I’ll still browse /all most days and the content has really gone downhill. Slo-mo car wreck in progress there, I think. Reddit can be fun, but reactions seem wildly random. I think that’s due to there just being a whole fucking lot of ppl there so you never know who will respond to any given comment.

I’ve been on kbin since leaving Reddit and I feel more at home here than on Reddit. More like being in a bar here as opposed to a huge stadium on Reddit. And I’m not in a rush to change that.

  • I appreciate that many older games are still available on Steam either “maintained” as in the article or “remastered”. Someday soon I will buy Total Annihilation…again…on Steam this time.

But I do not understand why games are seen as disposable, temporary media. Sure the latest titles are flashy but there are plenty of fucking awesome older games that are still fun to play. And as physical media disappears it becomes much more important for the gaming industry to stop pulling the ladder up behind themselves. History matters. Old <> bad.

There should be an equivalent to the classic rock stations for video games. I greatly appreciate the efforts of the MAME, archive.org and Mr. Lee to keep the classics alive.
