I’ve been in some scary situations, but I don’t think anything has ever compared to the fear + PANIC feeling of getting separated and then lost from my parents inside a busy store when I was a child. I feel like I can handle fear and get ahold of it pretty quickly as an adult, even in dangeroussituations, but panic is an entirely different animal and as a kid you have zero reference for that kinda thing.
Sometimes I stumble upon a random song on Spotify that has a catchy tune, so I save it into a playlist but don’t really listen to it until later, and in really hearing the lyrics for the first time, sometimes I’ll be like waiting a sec…is this about Jesus/God?
It would be interesting to see if it’s ever happened in the past, for sure. I too assumed it was due to poor education, but the three people I mentioned (my old boss and the 2 new coworkers) all came from different areas of the U.S. and are each in different generations (1 Boomer, 1 Gen X, 1 Millennial), so they all have very different backgrounds/education experiences, yet they ALL struggle to read anything longer than a single sentence. It’s infuriating. I try to be patient, because hey, we all have our thing we suck at, but it’s honestly a little scary that they and so many other are out there not following directions simply because they can’t read them.
Reading comprehension has gone down the tubes. I dunno if it’s from people watching too many TikToks and their attention span can’t handle reading more than one sentence anymore, or what, but I have definitely noticed a change in people’s ability to read and understand the content of what they just read.
Where I work, my old boss never wrote anything down, did not like to communicate via email, and insisted on phone calls/verbal meetings instead. When they announced they were taking a new job, we begged them to create an SOP of all the things they did with detailed instructions because NONE of it had ever been written down. We were told no, they couldn’t do that. No explanation other than “I can’t.” And I’m convinced that they simply couldn’t read, or could BARELY read.
So I created the SOP instead, detailed as hell, everything in one place. Sections, subsections, hyperlinks, it’s all there. 2 new employees come into the office, I’m supposed to train them. I do, and I show them the SOP, tell them “everything you need to know is in this SOP”, so that AFTER I train them, they can reference it.
They never reference it, ever. They ask me how to do the things they’ve forgotten instead. I just point them to the correct section in the SOP and tell them to read it. BUT THEY DON’T READ. It’s insane! How do they get by in life in general!?

Hell yeah, I love to bake. I definitely prefer baking over cooking, though I do enjoy both. I usually make bagels or cookies, but I’m gonna try my hand at sourdough bread soon. What do you like to bake?
If you cannot cook yourself a basic meal (I’m talking boil water, dump a box of pasta in, cook it, strain it, then add red sauce from a jar level of basic), you have failed as a human being. An adult using the whole excuse of “I just can’t cook” is pathetic and inexcusable unless you have genuine mental incapacities that prevent you from learning a basic recipe and how to use a stovetop, especially now with access to the internet/videos teaching how to cook.
Like many here, I left reddit during the whole API debacle, and I was doing really good about avoiding reddit for a while, but there’s way less people here, way less communities, and while yes, I could start the communities I’d like to see on Lemmy, I just don’t think there are enough users to have engaging conversations yet. For that reason, I maintain my reddit account, so that I can have those conversations and connections that I can’t get here. I hope it changes some day and we can grow our numbers here.
I’d say Iraq, but being that I was there as a part of an occupying force, it’s my fault they hated me for being there, so I totally get it. That aside, America (as an American) definitely has unfriendly people that one is forced to interact with on a regular basis.
I dunno about using the descriptors of “smooth” vs “hard”, but I definitely find some numbers more pleasing than others. I have no idea why. I guess for me it’s more about the flow of them, how they’re ordered, how they LOOK. It has nothing to do with primes, odds, even, etc. Like, I just see some numbers and think “I don’t like that one” but then others I’m cool with. 5112 is nice, 7654 I don’t like, for example.
Who’s gonna know? Furthermore, who’s gonna know, judge you on it, and you’ll actually give a damn what that person thinks of you? Screw whatever anyone thinks or says, buy what you want.
2020s smell like nothing because COVID
Man, that’s tough. I dunno, I found a single, live bedbug in my apartment once on my computer desk. I killed it immediately and blood came out, but then I never saw another one again and lived there for 2 more years.
Since your money is tight, you might want to get out before you incur fees and owe rent. Did you get the place through an assistance program? If so, I would notify them about the bug as well.
Bed bugs are BAD. Where was the bug when you found it? Was it on you, the floor, your stuff? Was it alive or dead? Could you stay there a few more days without bringing the rest of your stuff from your friend’s place and see if more bugs appear?
Bed bugs spread quickly and can travel on you or your clothes and infest other locations. That being said, it may have just been one. Then again, if it came from the apartment next door, more will likely infiltrate your place. If they are coming from next door, it won’t be enough to spray just your apartment, the entire building will need it.
Sorry for the difficult situation you’re in, this is a tough call.
Man, I didn’t even wander off, I was looking at something and they were behind me, and when I turned around, they were gone. It was just a sea of adults and I was short so all I could see was people’s legs lol
