If that’s the only language you have to communicate, I’d say more power to you. If you can translate what you’re saying using online tools, that might better facilitate communication and conversation.
Several years back now, one of my colleagues was very much into the genealogy thing. She had major problems I think with needing to find herself or where she fit in or whatever. She was very much pushing me to try one of the DNA genealogy testing services and I had to be very firm about not wanting to participate in it.
This is why. My sense of self has never been in question and I don’t need to attribute who or what I am to some people I’ve never met or culture I haven’t participated in or been a part of. I have been considered “other” my whole life by in groups who only wanted me to identify with the bits and pieces of my culture or personality that they approved of and I pretty much had to get over that at a young age in order to not feel inadequate or content with myself.
As a result these always seemed like services that over promise and under deliver and they ask for way more privileged information than I am comfortable with giving away to anyone (I was skeptical when my doctor wanted me to participate in cancer screening via DNA testing because the only angle I could see for wanting it that would be profitable to an insurance firm was to deny me coverage later). Every time something hits the media about a leak or mismanagement of customer data, I am vindicated in my belief that it’s not worth the price of admission.
I thought we had a whole community just for Musk BS. This isn’t tech.
Yeah. It’s grift. They want a privatized solution.
I didn’t realize it was a book. Guess I’ll be searching that out.
It would be awesome if they did face consequences so I didn’t have to keep my credit locked while I go through the process of getting a new SSN. This is getting ridiculous. They notified me by mail like a week ago that my data is in this breach too. This really needs to stop happening.
People don’t want to wake up. They see horrors every day and look no further than the surface of them. They are horrified by things they do not even begin to understand. But they’ll push a narrative if you put it in front of them and they feel reasonably selfrighteous about it.
That’s why nobody is out there actively eating the rich and becoming the Luigi they want to see in the world.
The secret is to get filthy rich, I guess. Money ≠ Repercussions.
This will hit a dead end as soon as Trump sends classified intelligence in an “All Hands” email.
There are problems with the law as well. The main one is that Tik Tok buys a whole lot of data about Americans and their browser history etc from data brokers. So they don’t necessarily need the app to gather information. Comparisons of the Tik Tok app vs it’s counterpart in China exist and they paint a pretty significant picture of the differences and similarities that explain how it could be used to push a narrative or propaganda. Barring that though two things can be true. It can be true that Tik Tok is a danger to national security, and also be lobbied against by American Tech companies.
What we’re seeing is that this law was the result of several things and doesn’t just have one singular aim. Anyone who says it’s just about one singular thing just doesn’t want to admit the validity of the other arguments because it ruins how they feel about the federal government, Tik Tok, China, Trump, Biden etc.
Tik Tok removed platform access from their US userbase voluntarily.
This was their choice.
The law is literally not even being enforced.
Notebooks that do this exist. What’s so revolutionary about a pen and app?
Agreed. I’ll fix that. Thank you.
They are throwing a tantrum in the stupidest way possible.
Third party apps with small users bases or ones that are used by people with disabilities (that have disability features) still work. For now. Also apps that allow for a read only view (meaning they can’t be used to sign in, write/post comments, or upvote/downvote) also still work I believe.
They’re already expending that manpower for the purposes of OPSEC. All those people already exist and are actively doing this job in the government. To add to that, literally all it calls for is for an order to remove the app from apps stores by adding it to a list of apps already banned. That doesn’t require extra man-power. Even if they bother with an “investigation” by the AG’s office etc (which is actually in the bill), it’s likely that relevant app stores will just remove the apps once they come understand investigation because the government is looking into them.
How do you figure it’s not sustainable? The government doesn’t have to do anything particularly to do it. It doesn’t require that Congress decide to/vote on the ban, will already be written into law, and it requires the users to have somewhere to move to that’s feasibly bad and able to sustain them.
We’re also already seeing Americans run afoul of rednote’s TOS and content policies. It will absolutely be the same on the next platform.
The thing you have to realize is that the bill is written in such a way that it doesn’t require any further regulation. That’s the main problem with this idea that the government won’t be able to keep up with regulating. If you don’t think the government’s OPSEC community has been vetting Chinese and Russian social media platforms for quite awhile now, you’re living in a dream world. The thing is they had to figure out a way to make it so they could ban or otherwise interfere in these apps because they’re corps. Now that they have figured that out the cat is out of the bag.
I will say that the suggestion that people use Loops instead is probably not going to work specifically because it’s too many users too fast.
The US government has been on a ban or otherwise regulate Chinese products kick for a few years now and it only takes someone who’s been paying attention to note the number of sanctions, bans of products and services, etc.
The US has levied 117 sanctions since 2020.
They have effectively banned Chinese EV’s.
The ban of Huawei, and ZTE, and potential ban of Chinese made Routers and networking equipment.
A better protest would be to stay on the Tik Tok platform with a VPN or other method. But moving to rednote is a lot like throwing a tantrum in your living room where nobody can see it. It detrimentally affects tik tok because they’re losing users/engagement as well.
The “ban” is. i wish people would read what the actual bill says.
The bill stipulates that any entity in the control of a foreign adversary with a certain user threshold that collects specific data and uses algorithms to track users would be banned. This is why the red note “protest” is also not going to work. They’ll just ban rednote as well. The ban is about more than just tik tok.
Just as I said. Perfect in every way. That’s how you know. Couldn’t bear to give him up. Say hi to Bob and Jack for me.
