  • This is a good summary.

One thing I will add though, I don’t think AI is going away any time soon. The hype and saturation will probably fade a bit (hopefully). But what we are also seeing right now is a move to more self-hosted AIs due to price increases in things like Copilot.

I wish some if my coworkers would realize the limitations and hazards of over-using AI. Too many of them are still deep-throating all things AI, pushing for it to be used for every single little thing.

  • Seeing how incohrrent and fractured humanity is, we’d meet them with a jumbled mix of:

    • Rabid xenophobia
    • Aggressively trying to convert them to a dozen of our different religions
    • Forming multiple cults worshipping them as gods
    • Creating a shit load of really weird rule 34 AI-generated porn focused on them
    • Dismissing their existence as some sort of a deep fake conspiracy
    • Trying to sell them some worthless shit for a massive profit
    • Trying to sell them fellow humans as slaves
    • Trying to steal their technology to conquer the galaxy
    • Flooding then with brainrot memes for the lolz
    • Trying to destroy them with conventional weapons

And they would see all this and either destroy us in disgust or get the hell out of the solar system ASAP and cordon it off with hazard signs.

  • Game of Thrones has got to be up there. Very catchy and fairly unique, but it really captures the essence of (the best parts of) the show.

The themes to Foundation and Severance are also both really in tune with their respective shows.

But for me, the theme to The Expanse is my favorite. Again, it captures the essence of the show, and also like the show it’s pretty underrated.

  • In that scenario where AI is used to find specific code snippets or other matching text blocks, the false positives aren’t really the problem. The false negatives are the issue.

I’ve run into that myself a few times when trying to use AI. You give it a very clear prompt to find something and it sometimes just falls flat on its face. It’s easy for the AI evangelists to just blame the human who wrote the prompt, or say “you didn’t give it enough context!” But anyone who’s tried using AI and is being objective about it will tell you that’s a weak excuse that doesn’t hold water a good chunk of the time. You can give it plenty of context, and be very clear, and it still doesn’t find all the examples that clearly match the prompt.

Ultimately, you often have better luck using a well-crafted regular expression to search for text than using AI.

And that seems like the crux of the issue (which you also highlight). While there are some very good use cases for AI, it’s being waaaay over-used. And too often its faults are dismissed or glossed over.

  • I was initially surprised by this too. But the more I think about it, the more expected it is.

Trump’s hardcore base is mostly comprised of evangelical protestants. And they fucking hate the pope in every form (more conservative and more liberal ones alike), and Catholics in general.

His comments will energize their support, which has been slipping a bit due to the Epstein files. And as someone else said he, the hardcore base of ultra-conservative Catholics who also support Trump won’t care about his latest comments, because they hate Leo too.

This really is just playing to his base. Not in a 4D chess way, but more in the form of his latest tantrum unwittingly hitting a strategic sweet spot.

  • Hard to tell right now. He used to be one of Orban’s buddies up until a few years ago. He’s saying the right things right now - less corruption, more services for Hungarians, closer ties to the EU and NATO.

But we’ll see. From what I understand, Orban was also seen as a progressive about 20 years ago. But then Putin and greed got their hooks into him. Hopefully the new guy is legit.

If he is legit, I wonder his this will shift the dynamic in the EU. Without Hungary vetoing everything Putin doesn’t like, does this clear the path more for Ukraine joining the EU and/or NATO? I know there are a lot of other factors in okay. But the people of Hungary might have just helped others and not just themselves.
