  • Depending on your setting and desired outcome for the poisoner, uraninite (aka pitchblende) might be an option. It has historical uses in glass making and pottery glazing, which could provide justification for why someone would have it.

It contains Uranium, which is radioactive, but I don’t believe will bioaccumulate, but can build up on surfaces, tools, and clothing providing a source of long-term radiation exposure. In addition, it contains lead, which does bioaccumulate, providing a source of gradual long term poisoning as well as radium which also bioaccumulates and is radioactive, providing an additional source of longterm radiation exposure.

  • I don’t know if I’d want to live in the UFP. Post-dominion war (and during it) it gets a bit dystopian. And of the time periods depicted, there’s only a pretty narrow window where they’re not at war with at least one major power. Specifically after the khitomer accords are signed and prior to the encounter with the Borg. So, really only a 70 year period. And even then, there’s a cold war with the Romulans.

That galaxy is largely hostile and while a lot of UFP citizens are able to live in blissful ignorance, I’m not sure I’d enjoy that.

  • Probably Norway, Finland, or Sweden. At the risk of potentially offending all Scandinavians, in terms of the things I personally care about, all three countries can be considered as essentially the same. They all check pretty much all of my boxes. They all have ideal (meaning Arctic or subarctic) weather, they’re in a particularly beautiful part of the world, politically and socially they generally align well with my values, hiking and other outdoor activities are readily available, and while it’s not the primary language, English is broadly spoken to a high degree of fluency in all three countries. Meaning I wouldn’t have to struggle to communicate while trying to learn the local language.

In terms of a degree, I don’t currently have one, but I generally enjoy the field I currently work in, so I’d probably go for either a general computer science degree or something more focused on system administration. Possibly with a minor involving some electrical engineering courses.

  • That makes more sense. So, personal conflict rather than national conflict?

In my present state of moderate intoxication, I’d say something similar to my above point, but with the opposite statement regarding fairness. If you are unable to resolve your differences via civil discussion, then settle it with a duel with strict rules as follows.

The rules of which should be:

    1. the field should be cleared of bystanders, excepting an impartial referee

    2. The only weapons permitted should be flintlock, smooth bore pistols

    3. Shooting should occur at high noon (or whatever time would give both parties equal visual impairment due to the sun)

    4. Parties should stand twenty paces apart

    5. Parties should fire one round each and then move an additional ten paces apart

    6. Repeat step 4 until at least one party is dead

  • In love, no absolutely not. That sounds like a justification for rape, spousal abuse, stalking, harassment, cheating, and other kinds of shitty behavior where it is neither expected nor wanted.

In war, yes. I think that war is one of the most horrific things one nation can perpetrate on another and should be exactly that… If your goal, as a nation, is anything less than the genocide of your target nation’s people, the salting of their land, and the complete eradication of their culture, then your issues can and should be solved diplomatically.

And if that is your goal, fuckin’ do it.

  • I doubt it will be climate change specifically. I think it will be the increasing political divisiveness. It’ll be a whole bunch of different issues, climate change included, that neither political party can agree on the reality of, much less how to address them that will continue to escalate tensions between the two major political parties until we reach the point of a second civil war.

I think America is less than 50 years away from that point. The path we’re on ends in war. Who knows if our country will survive.

To be fair to Meta, they did tell you they might do that. They didn’t lie. They just told you in the find print of an already convoluted and arcane legal document that they know most people would never read, fewer would understand, and no one could do anything to change.

So unlike Tesla, where they did lie about FSD’s capabilities, and that is at best false advertising but probably actually fraud, Meta at least had a thin veneer of plausible deniability against accusations of being liars when they sold your data to unknown third-parties because they did tell you about it, you just needed a law degree to understand what they were telling you.

  • Pretty sure the term “prepper” is just shorthand for “doomsday prepper” or something to that effect. People who think the collapse of civilisation is, if not imminent, a strong possibility within the next human lifetime and are preparing for that.

I am definitely not that. I just take precautions against the specific emergencies that occur where I live with a level of regularity.

Blizzards knock out power for hours sometimes into a day or two once or twice a year. We have multiple earthquakes a day, typically in the M1 to M3 range, but M7+ are once a decade events, M9+ are once are century events. Being ready for reasonable natural disasters isn’t prepping, it’s just smart
