I appreciate some religious people trying to distance themselves from the shitty ones, really, I do.
But people who do stuff that isn’t normal for a thing that only they believe in or know about still really shakes my faith in the social contract with them.
Add on to that that the bad people share the same beliefs makes predicting when evil behavior or shadowy fucked up evil behavior is gonna happen really difficult.
And then finally, that bad stuff happens overwhelmingly often from the people that believe that stuff… I have a hard time not believing they’re all bad. I know they probably aren’t, but the vast majority of them have been hostile and crazy and freak me out and I just stay away because I don’t need to deal with that and it’s just easier and safer for me to avoid them and warn others like me.
My holy book says “you can rape the children of your enemy” and “beat your wife and your kids, but try not to do it too much” and “everyone else will suffer more than the human mind can conceive”
But I only practice that last one.
IMO, does not make someone “one of the good ones”, and I hope they take it to heart that I think they are no better than the overtly murderous and racist ones. Because they are separated but by the width of a hair from the pocket-foreskin of their savior.
I used to be that way. Then I saw that the “good in people” who are able to “ignore the bad stuff” in that book, doesn’t change the fact that they are bombs that simply don’t happen to be exploding right now.
If you change to one of their “triggers” or if they begin to see you or the world in a way that triggers their religious fervor, they can pivot to being the horrors in an instant.
I hope you never have to watch the eyes of a loved one who’s always seemed to have a very good heart, glaze over as they switch gears to “you’re the devil and no action is off the table to ‘cleanse’ you”. Because they all have that switch. Every single one of them.
I would never want to be able to overlook this aspect of a person. Just like I wouldn’t want to be able to overlook Joanne just to enjoy a mid story about wizards. Or work for the carceral system just for a paycheck.
If I were cowering from these people, or reacting in excess caution to a non-existent threat, I would agree that therapy would be useful for my viewpoint. As a trans person, I can only imagine that you were experiencing one or the other, and that is why you suggested them for me, assuming that I was suffering similarly.
I very much appreciate the concern for my mental health. I am properly cautious, like you should be of venomous snakes.

I do try, yet struggle, with differentiating in nuance. I think it’s important to see the good in people, as well as the problems.
I don’t think I have exactly a utilitarian world view, but there’s definitely some aspects of that in my judgement in certain questions.
