I read in lemmy support that this is a significant problem. I don’t get it. What does anyone gain in down voting without reason?

If a spam bot or a trolling account comes along I go on a downvoting spree.

There are entire instances where if you down vote stuff without leaving a comment to explain why, they ban you…
So OP and others see those people act like downvotes are a huge deal, and they believe them
I’m on lemmy for some time… Never noticed there’s a problem regarding this? If anything, up/downvotes rarely matter at all.
I think ive been here almost 3 years now and saw another post about this earlier today (asking if there are mod tools to deal with this) and someone said it was “the biggest problem Lemmy faces today,” which I found quite odd as vote counts don’t even matter here.

Depends. Are we talking about posts or comments? Comments shouldn’t even have scores in the first place. Lemmy is better when you hide comment scores and sort comments by old.
I’ve been downvoted to hell and back (I’m an anti-imperialist, anti-Western supremacy monotheist that believes in objective reality and that some decisions are objectively more or less moral than others, so it’s just expected 🤷) but I doubt it’s ever been some sort of coordinated effort and not just what happens when one reads the truth/different POVs that oppose and weaken one’s idiosyncrasies but is too cowardly and/or stupid to process it, so all one can do is have an emotional tantrum in the form of a downvote.
