For example, Black and Native American people account for a disproportionate number of drowning deaths in the US. But it would be irresponsible to simply conclude that those groups are inherently bad swimmers. Just like the way the 13/50 trope is irresponsibly used to imply non-whites are inherently more prone to criminal behavior.

Statistics are just numbers. What matters is how they are used. Anyone who has studied stats knows that it’s common to craft misleading conclusions from real data.
So what is the “right” way to use them?

I have studied statistics. In my studies I learned that numbers do not lie, people lie. And, as was stated before, people can manipulate numbers to match their narrative.
I’ve seen studies published as “fact” just because the author manipulated the numbers to match their findings.
