In my view, the only ones that really care are the people whose opinions don’t matter. The Gulf of Mexico will always be the Gulf of Mexico, regardless of what it may legally be called. Much the same way, in my view, X will always be Twitter, And Zuckerberg will always be POS.

The one group that does understand class solidarity are the wealthy. They’re not bowing to him because they’re all in sync.

Reported an issue with the name. I know I’m shouting into the void on this but a small poke in the eye makes me feel better.

Well, yeah, because the United States Geographical Service is the source of truth for geographical names. No surprise Google and Apple follow it. There’s a little more breakdown than that, but that’s the gist of it.

    https://www.usgs.gov/us-board-on-geographic-names/domestic-names

The change is fucking stupid, you know it, I know it, we all know it. Save your fucking ire for all the real shit going down. In comparison, this doesn’t rate a single breath.

This is correct, given a new administration can simply change it back to keep it in line with the rest of the world. Won’t do us much good if there isn’t a next administration, though.

They don’t have to take it away, they can just set up the backend to blackhole those requests. So presence of the report issue facility does not imply they actually will ever even see the issue.

Why are Americans so riled up about this?

Do you guys not realize that this reaction is literally one of the reasons they do this? To be a distraction and to show their base that they made the bad people™ cry about it.

Why are Americans so riled up about this?

For me, it’s the blatant racism with some fascist nationalism thrown in.

Come on man if we are crying racism over this is nonsense no-one will actually listen to us when we are actually facing real racism.

This is exactly what they want.

Hot take, but I’d actually be fine with the US calling it the Gulf of the Americas since it is a shared gulf by north and south America. There are examples like the south China Sea and the Persian Gulf that have different names depending on what country you are in. But calling it the Gulf of America is just dumb.

I agree with the sentiment on Gulf of Americas. But I think the singular (and referring to land of both continents) makes more sense. Firstly because it rolls off the tongue better. Secondly because the existence of the ‘North America’ and ‘South America’ both imply that those lands are parts of a larger body of land called America. North America being the Northern half of America. While South America presides in the Southern half.

‘America’ being the United States is only reinforced by the fact that the United States is the most significant nation in global politics East of the Pacific and West of the Atlantic.
