A decade? How about a generation? Or several?

It’s not a thing we’re going to recover from quickly. It’ll probably take a generation - if not several. We are continuing to squander reputation and trust that has been built over the course of more than a century. The damage being done here cannot be overstated. It’s geopolitically catastrophic. We are creating a power vacuum, and Europe isn’t stepping up nearly aggressively enough.

I would imagine that you could set up some sort of insulated battery and/or capacitor setup that could be used to melt off any accumulated snow and ice once a storm passes with some heating elements embedded in the photovoltaics. Though, that probably introduces the issue of falling frozen debris striking panels lower down on the dam. Nonetheless, given the efficiency gains, it’s probably a problem worth solving - especially since this Swiss proof-of-concept seems to be working out so well.

Iirc the article to which this is loosely referring was about how pickpockets were taken aback when American tourists during the Olympics would physically accost them after they pickpocketed said tourists and didn’t escape quickly enough.
