How is it possible that there is zero legal consequence for this: “Initial statements from the police department said Dial shot the driver outside the vehicle after he “lunged at” police with a knife, but the department later walked back these statements.”

I highlight this because I would struggle to think of a controversial case where video confirmed police statements about what happened (the only one I can think of is that poor young girl with the knife in Ohio), but time after time after time we see police statements later proven to be blatant falsehoods and it seems to not matter whatsoever. (Walter Scott is the first example that penetrated my consciousness, but I know there have been many more.)

Why is there no consequence (ever, as far as I can tell) for police fabrication of events?

I’m as F12 as you can get, but it does happen. Of course, you have to live first, which is unlikely when you defend yourself against cops.

I think that’s overstating it a smidge. I don’t see there being much impact for many of these companies beyond schadenfreude for those of us watching. Twitter’s going to die, but since Musk obviously doesn’t care it takes a lot of the satisfaction from it. Most of these others - I doubt it’s more than a blip.

Not that I don’t agree with and cheer for your overall point. I just don’t think most of this is moving the needle in any direction.

I have never seen a normal conversation that address any of the conserns that parents and people who have conservative values would have.

When conservatives learn to present their arguments in a non-hyperbolic fashion that doesn’t ignore science and reality, and to have an adult conversation about the merits of those arguments, and to be honest about what is motivating those arguments, then this complaint will hold some water.

I mean, I already recommended firefish.social, but you are under no obligation to try it. My point is that your experience is very much not typical I think.

In any case, if you plunk “left leaning mastodon instances” into your search engine of choice that would probably work, but you could also try a popular instance which would address several of your concerns. If firefish doesn’t interest you with its various improvements to the UI, why not just go for the original and (I think) biggest - mastodon.social.

I feel like these comments are from folks who haven’t really used it. The traffic on your specific instance isn’t really the point most of the time. And the fact that you can find another instance easily if the guy in charge of your instance is an asshole is a pretty huge feature. Who runs the other instance of Twitter you can move to?

You can migrate your account and followers/following lists until you find an instance where the admin isn’t a “power tripping asshole” - and I’m not convinced that’s a widespread problem in any case.

The Mastodon interface is kinda barebones though still not as bad as I think you are describing, but I migrated (gasp) my entire mastodon account to firefish.social, which federates with Mastodon, with a couple of clicks, and the interface and features there are really great. (And there are also multiple firefish instances to choose from in case the admin becomes an power tripping asshole)

But most importantly:

unless you tune into the echo chamber most instances are, you’re not going to have interesting conversations

Why wouldn’t you be following people from the broader fediverse? The federated feed on firefish (and on most instances I’d think) scrolls by so fast I have to pause it to read anything. There’s plenty being posted. Certainly no less comparatively than I see on kbin/lemmy, and it gets better continuously.

I’m all for using what you like and avoiding what you don’t, but this is like an infomercial-level criticism of Mastodon, like when they spend 45 secs showing you how hard it is to scramble eggs and cook them without their forty dollar gadget.

I’ve been convinced for at least a couple of months that this is exactly what he’s doing. Once having that realization, I felt it should actually have been really obvious the moment he decided to lay off huge chunks of the technical staff and was openly hostile to key software engineering folks who spoke out.

This suggests a different sequence of events than the one Rantz outlined in his piece attempting to exonerate Auderer before the video became public today.

You’ll almost always find one. TL;DR: When cameras are on cops, turns out they are shown to lie. A lot.

And let’s not forget that law enforcement has been the primary tool of unionbusting from day 1.

So another story that starts with cops lying about their actions.

Not to twist the knife, but looking at all the cases that have relied on bodycams or bystander phone cams - almost always coupled with a police report that the video proved later to be a lie - makes me shudder to imagine what was going on every single decade before cops had to always worry about likely being on someone’s camera.

I have my concerns about what the increasing proliferation of cell phone cameras, private security cameras, and doorbell cams mean for general privacy, but no doubt this behavior is only going to get harder and harder for cops.

We’ll know we’ve crossed a turning point when most of the time the video doesn’t prove the initial police statement was a lie. Don’t think we’re there yet, but we’ll get there. And frankly it’s become clear that police aren’t going to change their behavior without being caught a lot more, so at this point I say bring on the cams.
