Unfortunately, there’s many many reasons that could be the case. I’m just putting this out there since it’s easy to check for and mitigate against.

• This is for Lemmy admins only. It might apply to others in some form, but this seems to be specifically exploiting a Lemmy API endpoint
• My Nginx solution may have room for improvement; I was just trying to block that behavior without breaking comments in posts and move on with my day. Suggestions for improvement are welcome.

Oh, sorry. One of the new features in this dev branch is the ability to disable PMs and mentions. I’ve been running with those turned off. Seems like that feature is working lol.

Oh, I meant just if the instance isn’t know, I thought resolving would make it “aware” of that instance. I could be wrong. But yeah, the instance would have to federate with the other one for it to be able to resolve, though. e.g. it won’t resolve an object from an instance that is on the current instance’s “block” list.

I believe you can, yeah, and I also think that “bootstraps” that instance to yours if it doesn’t already know about it. But in that case, the way I have the search written, it’ll “fall back” to regular search which also does resolveObject. That just takes longer.

The ap_id check is just to short-circuit that behavior to avoid the lengthy, often unnecessary, search and quickly redirect you to your instance’s local copy.

Have had that working for about a week now, and it’s pretty nice. Please do steal this feature lol.

At startup, it calls /api/v3/federated_instances and stores the result to a lookup variable. Then I’ve got a couple of helper functions that accept either an instance ID or a domain name which looks them up from the lookup variable.

It doesn’t now, but I’d be willing to add that to Tesseract. Seems easy enough to implement.

Edit: It’s not fully plumbed in yet, but the settings to configure it have been added to the filter policy framework. Will probably also do a similar setting for comments. Shown enabled here, but disabled by default, naturally.

Edit 2: Plumbed in and working now in the dev build. Can also completely hide those, but that doesn’t exactly work for a screenshot.

Lemmy’s API doesn’t have a direct way to do that, unfortunately.

Tesseract (web-based lemmy app) used to have that before I took it out. After the ranking metrics were removed from the API, it was hard to sort them other than by new/old or by score. When you have a mix of active and inactive communities, it didn’t work great without the ranking metrics being there.

You can still group communities, but only for organizing them or (in the dev branch/next version) applying filter policies to communities in that group.

I may revisit the idea if I can figure out a better way to generate/sort the custom feeds.

Mod removals should link to this automatically and be more transparent for why comments were removed in the first place

I linked to the modlog through Lemmy World’s instance of Tesseract. I’m the dev of that UI, and I agree with you that removal reasons should be more accessible.

A version or two ago I built in a feature to automatically resolve the removal reason and append it where the comment would be, right there in the comment section. If that’s disabled, there’s a button to take you to the modlog for that item.

If Tesseract isn’t your cup of tea, maybe ask the dev of your client to add a similar feature.

They’re literally in the modlog - all you have to do is look.

I’m not. That’s just the conclusion you jumped to because I modded you for dehumanizing people in the same way the ones you have such strong opinions about have done. Again, yes, the paradox of tolerance exists, but it is not a blank check for that kind of behavior.

The paradox of tolerance doesn’t say shit about adopting the tactics of your perceived enemies (dehumanizing people to justify jailing them or worse) nor does it condone it. It also does not give one a pass to advocate violence against people one accuses of being part of the not-tolerated group.

Again, if the populace of Lemmy didn’t jump straight to “You’re a nazi/bootlicker” as a default method of disagreement, these kinds of comments could be taken differently.

If you convince the public that one group is undeserving of human rights, then it’s easier to convince them of the next group. It’s also incredibly easy to expand the first group you’ve already dehumanized to include even more people than it did before.

Even if you think nazi’s don’t deserve human rights, what definition of nazi are you using? On the internet, especially Lemmy, people will take each other out of context, call each other nazis over the slightest disagreement and then strut around like they’ve somehow won the debate.

You say nazis don’t deserve human rights but then people go around calling each other nazis over nothingburger disagreements which, according to your logic, immediately revokes their human rights.

And the jump to “the mods must be fascist supporters” is an absolute dive straight into insane troll logic.

Looking at the modlog, it was because the comment section was turning into a lynch mob, frothing at the mouth, and calling for more and more intense violence. Hiding behind “I’m totally joking, but…” isn’t the magic shield you think it is.

No, this isn’t Reddit, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to platform calls for violence and extremism.

If we really want to make sure that never happens again, that award should be $314.6m each.
