This reminds me of a recent stay at a chain hotel. One person at the front desk for the entire hotel. He seemed really overwhelmed. I felt bad for the guy.

I just followed you so that, when I remember, I can read your future posts :)
!fediverseobserver would you happen to know?
Thinking of possible scenarios: If you have school age children and want them educated in a public school; f you were LQBTQ+; if you were POC; and/or if you wanted politicians who shared your values and policy priorities, you would be directly affected. ETA: Thought of one more. If you can possibly get pregnant, intentionally or not, you could also possibly have a miscarriage or stillbirth and be charged with an abortion. So abortion laws will affect you even if you aren’t actively seeking an abortion.
Also, tangentially related to politics, infrastructure in Texas seems precarious. There are no politicians holding the private companies that run the power grid responsible. People have died because of the cold and the heat in Texas due to infrastructure issues and no politicians and pushing for a solution. It looks like things will simple become worse. This affects everyone in Texas.
Even if they had checked the weather, would they have known 0.8 inches of rainfall translates into being stranded in the desert and possible death? I’ve never been to BM or spent time in a desert so this is news to me. Were people warning about this and attendees just ignored it?
¿Por qué no los dos?
This just happened in Jacksonville:
I don’t think its a Federal requirement to offer employees any vacation or sick leave in the US. For many office jobs you have to earn leave time over the course of months or years - it’s not unheard of to have zero leave time the first six months of employment.
I’m not sure if the plaintiffs are white women but …scholars say the greatest beneficiaries of affirmative action policies are white women, from college campuses to the American workplace.
The lawsuit cites three female business owners, one from New York and two from Virginia, who argued that they could have benefited from the Fearless Fund grants but were ineligible because they are not Black.
But if the money went to three non-Black women, wouldn’t the fund be practicing explicit gender discrimination? The money should skip right over them and go to white men, taking their argument even further.
Thank you sincerely for this refreshingly positive take. I needed to read it.
I didn’t read the article, just saw the picture in the post and thought "that dude looks a lot like Rahm Emanuel. " TIL.
I’m wondering if physical (and maybe chemical) exfoliation sloughs off "diseased and dysfunctional " skin, and if moisturizer/lotion also keeps these skin cells healthy. Of course, sunscreen and avoiding too much sun exposure probably helps the best of all. ETA: I just read the article and it suggests that moisturizing could help stave off inflammation that leads to dementia. But I still wonder if exfoliating would be read the same way in the body as itching the skin (which leads to inflammation).
One difference is that you used to be able to get a cable plus Internet plus phone package for a temporary deal of $99/month for two years. You could threaten to.cancel.and the cable company would offer to extend it or offer a similar deal (say, the same package for $125/month). If you were willing to inconvenience yourself, you could go ahead and cancel.and get another member of the household to get the package as a new customer, bringing it back.down to $99/month (or, if you were a tenant, you could get the new deal.when you moved again).
Now Internet is separated from the entertainment piece, so it’s $110+/month for Internet plus whatever you pay for all of the streaming services plus cell phone (since hardly anyone is paying for a landlines anymore). (Plus VPN or other Internet adjacent spending if so inclined. ) That adds up.to more than the old school cable, Internet and.phone package. I think separating everything out is where people are feeling the pinch.
I’m in the US. I subscribe around Black Friday (day after our Thanksgiving) for the year. Usually some streaming service has a deal. I currently have Disney+ and Hulu with ads bundled together for $5/mo and Peacock for 99 cents/month for the year, and Starz for $3 for two months (have to remember to cancel soon). Those deals are the only reason why we are subscribed to those.
IIf they offer deals two or.more years in a row, my husband and I take turns subscribing.
With all those options there is still very little to watch.
Maybe at the end of each post add “Cross-posted at https://kbin.social/m/futurology@futurology.today” and the Lemmy equivalent?
I’m glad to see he’s involved with a documentary. Hopefully it’s all about this journey. I’d imagine he has a very unique perspective on people all around the world and all of the different cultures if the world, and id love to hear more about it (the article at the end gives some views but I’m sure he has many more things to say).
Nows the time for them to use that travel insurance and get a full refund. They may be putting themselves in danger and, regardless, they will be vacationing where people are actively suffering.
I admire Nick Cave a lot and value his opinion as a songwriter. He’s absolutely right in calling it the “boundless machine of artistic demoralisation.” What’s more demoralizing than know ChatGBT could churn out a facsimile of your work, making a mockery of your artistic struggles and obsessions? All you have to do is listen to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (my fave album is Tender Prey) to see that he was exorcising something deeply personal and a little perverse, and that’s one of the things that makes his music art and not just a digital token.
-Older, more conservative people.
-People who watch sports who are not aware of other options.
-And people who have bundled services and either have to take the bundle.to get decent Internet speeds or who have persuasively priced bundles.
