  • I always enjoy the April Fools efforts from Guild Wars. They’ve done all sorts of things from making all players tiny, giving them bobbleheads, making them go into “airplane mode” (a reference to a t-pose animation glitch but with added “homemade” sound effects) to entire quest lines and even an entirely new game mode inspired by 8 bit platformers that spawned its own festival because it was awesome. This year you can relive some highlights from recent years, but the new addition is being able to open your own Cat Cafe in your homestead.

  • I really love tilapia in butter with a bit of lemon, salt and pepper. It’s a mild and subtle tasting fish, and it’s hard to mess it up when cooking. You can get frozen loins for cheap because they’re plant fed and easily farmed. Cook until flakey, don’t burn it, serve with some pan fried or roasted veggies and rice or quinoa. I’ve only ever had it take on that “fishy” smell when I left it to thaw in the fridge too long.

  • I like to make up pasta dishes in sauce with veggies that reheat well. Pasta alfredo (made with butter and parmigiano reggiano) with spinach and pieces of chicken, or red sauce pasta with a bunch of veggies like zucchini, broccoli, onions and even beans, with some olive oil in the sauce. I buy the precut frozen veggie medleys and chuck them in. You can also make egg fried rice with veggies in it, with your choice of butters and oils. Cheese, nuts, dairy, eggs, I agree with other commenters that fat is not your enemy. Sugar and ultra-processed stuff should still be avoided but embrace the butter, haha.

Peanut butter is also fantastic for healthy calorie density and travels well.

  • Dr Pepper made with real sugar, the taste with HFCS is just not the same.

SteakEze had these microwave angus burgers that you could get at BJs that basically mimicked McDs flavor. Whenever one of us was craving fast food, we could pop it in the microwave and it scratched that itch and was much cheaper, easier and faster. Sadly haven’t seen them for sale anymore and they got taken off the website.

The thing I miss the absolute most is some fruit nectars I used to get that came in big glass bottles, by Fruit of the Nile. They had mango, strawberry guava, guava and orange mango and they were all so incredibly good. My favorite was the mango, it was rich and thick and luxurious, almost just a fruit puree. They made the best mixers. I still use the bottles around the house. I don’t think the company made it through Covid 😫

  • My favorite chocolate bar is any iteration of the Chuao s’mores bar. The graham cracker crumble texture and the bits of marshmallow are just all kinds of mouth happy, and the chocolate is rich and smooth. As far as enjoying the chocolate for the chocolate though, Noi Sirius traditional Icelandic dark chocolate is floral and fruity with a deep rich flavor and so silky. Single origin Madagascar or Ecuadorian chocolate is delightfully complex and full of interesting fruity undertones, it makes mainstream blended chocolate seem bland. All of the pretentious type of puffery people say about wines is actually self evident and true when it comes to single origin chocolate.

For something you can find at the grocery store and just chuck in your mouth, I enjoy Dove.

  • I read those books over and over again just to spend more time there. I still remember more details about the cultures, cities, and fashion in those books better than I could ever remember the plot. The magic and higher moral themes were very simplistic in comparison to other books but RJ really excelled at fleshing out a continent with diverse and unique peoples that made sense in that world.

  • Every kid is different, but if you’re not able to ask the parents then a safe bet is a duplo set. Bristle blocks are also great. My kid is currently 2 1/2 so these are what I know would be hits with him and his friends.

You could also get one of the following books:

    Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site
    Don’t Worry Little Crab
The Little Blue Truck (it’s a whole series, the Halloween one would be appropriate)
Bear Snores On or any other book in that series.
