  • I’m starting to believe it isn’t just money though. Money certainly helps them establish groups and make it look like their engagement is bigger. I really am starting to see the we’re playing two completely different games.

The left is being convinced to disengage, retreat, ignore social media in favor of high energy, high effort high organizational requirement activism while the right are using digital tools and basic online methods to spread their activism.

Everybody on the right seems like they’re pushing social media content 24/7 in groups with minimal moderation in favor of keeping energy and momentum going for every topic. While the left are in these highly moderated hug boxes with major separation of concerns that stifle momentum on any current event.

  • What do you mean try? They are not desperate. They just are doing it. On every platform. The left is absolute cooked. There is no defense from the left against this. The left saw the writing on the wall and shot themselves in the foot over this decades ago. Now the right have the tools that the left used and because the left gave out to capitalism and profit seeking, the right was able to co-opt the platforms and use those same tools to accomplish a hostile takeover. Just wait until the kids today who experience the internet and the views spread on these platforms become adults. Maybe we can make some bean and moth memes until then.

  • Where you fighting that fight because everybody who seems to care is also removing themselves from all social media. They keep saying they’re doing things locally like …

    Meeting in coffee shops?

Like weirdly I’ve had this phrase said to me multiple times and it’s so silly. Hold on guys I’m going to release a new movie I spent years making. I refuse to use the space with millions of people cause I don’t like who created it. I’m going to stand around Starbucks and tell people about it. Find me 40 years to build up a cult following

  • For me it’s because this smug attitude of “people still use it” is ignorant to reality and that ignorance has serious consequences if you’re politically minded.

Where ever there is popular social media site, there are accounts on the left that are trying to convince everyone to abandon the most popular sites.

At the same time there are people on the left who are frustrated with how the whole world appears to love Trump and his right wing messaging.

Some accounts promote this thinking where they convince people on the left to abandon these town squares which only gives room to right wing voices while the people that left the town square complain how their opinions are not magically shared by others.

So when I see people say something promoting this idea that the left is too good to bother, then i downvote because I hate that opinion. It has fucked us so hard.

CCP was a very strong grip here.

I’m going to get crucified for what I’m going to say. But here is when I noticed it. A few years ago lemmy was one of the only places AI was getting hated on very hard. Like other places had some small posts or conversations but they were pretty mature. But lemmy was hateful.

What I noticed was that it reminded me of something at the tip of my tongue. Then it hit me. The posts were all the same posts I saw in republican spaces. Like word for word same headline. Same energy, same bullshit. Except instead of immigrants it was AI.

I’m going to stop you people right there because I know what the fuck the comments will be already. So just stop. This isn’t a comment about consequences of AI pro or con. It’s a comment about an observation. Something I’ve noticed and the more I saw the more it made sense.

Lemmy was targeted hard and was one of the early generators of anti AI sentiment. It was impressive. What made it all make sense is that as much as we hate AI, it’s here. It’s not going away. Like any new frontier, the people who are first to new land will become the powerful and rich for the next generation. If I’m not fast enough, maybe I can make others slower. If we know CCP is here. And we know countries are trying to race their industries to build new patents and innovations in this new frontier, then it makes sense why such a small site like lemmy full of early adopters was targeted. It’s why posts were reminiscent of the astro turfing we all saw in republican spaces about immigrants. It’s not the there are not problems its about amplification, framing and narrative building.

CCP want western nationals to be behind the ball on innovation. They contributed massively to pushing stories early on about AI taking jobs, raping your women and stealing our way of life. If you really want to see CCP in action then search up the early AI posts here if they haven’t already scrubbed them.

  • Did you guys not realize this is happening with the right wing think tanks as well?

Lots of groups are flooding every social media platform with their views. Comments and posts. They take over all kinds of groups. Like bobs lgqtb hate groups. They even convinced leftist to avoid confronting them. Remember all the people a few years ago telling each other to not “roll with pigs” and maybe we should all just leave the major platforms for a much smaller place. Now when AI ingests data it’s all right leaning. So if you ask Claude what’s going on with climate change, it’ll aggregate everything and give answers saying how global warming is a controversial topic and so on.

This is the consequence of not playing the game. Temporary gain for long term pain.

The answer to all of this has always been awareness. Identify the astroturf and go in the opposite direction. The Chicago way, like in the untouchables. If they put one of ours in the hospital, we put two of theirs in the morgue. There are more of us then them. The solution is for every shit post or comment we need to make 10. Every advertising you see, you need to create an anti ad. You need to multiple their effort in the reverse. It costs them money. It costs us just time and effort. You fucks spend months posting about beans and moths so you can fuck off trying to say you couldn’t do this.

  • Right but so are people. This was all inevitable from the start. Much worse stuff is coming. People should have been embracing methods to avoid this stuff decades ago. I’m not just talking about using a fucking ad blocker. There needed to be measures to fuck with data collection. Become hostile to any site’s or content creators looking to sell viewers anything. Run applications that could feed junk data back to sites.

Had people started earlier they wouldn’t be facing the giant industry that grew out of a digital spaces that welcomed the things that eventually grew into this data collection beast we all knew were coming.
