I write software and I’m in the same situation. My goal right now is to focus on companies that have been there a long time (20/30 years old, I shun startups).
Better if they work on an subject that is the most boring ever, stuff that will be stable for a long time.
It is subjective but I’m fed up with crazy managers who harass people because line must go up.
In France most software companies only pretend to do R&D in order to get lower taxes on some salaries. But it’s never research.
But why? Is there a need for that kind of crap?

Medical devices are already supported for a very long time. At least the official ones used in hospitals.

In the 2000s in France, some people wrote books on children with high IQ, and suddenly all the parents had a gifted child. Psychiatricists were flooded with IQ tests from those parents. There were dozens of forums on the web with parents of gifted children, and other forums with self-diagnosed teenagers.
Then the fad died and all those web sites disappeared.
Now it’s ADHD and autism. Most are self-diagnosed again I’m sure because it’s fun and easier to have mental issues, instead of accepting that you should work in yourself. Would you rather be special, or normal and boring?

Unemployment and despair started in the 90s IMHO. It can be nostalgia speaking though.
Up to the 80s you could have a job for life, cocaine, naked women on TV every day, neon colors everywhere. My experience of the 90s was depressing grunge music and faded colors. Again, nostalgia I guess.
French but I guess it’s equivalent in other European countries. I have some lawyers friends who work in that subject, an they confirm that fighting against lies takes months. I don’t have that time to waste.
I worked with the nicest manager ever. He turned into a red flag 5 minutes before firing me because his boss decided that AI is good enough.
