Sounds like they don’t want to sell lifetime memberships.
LOL. As if I would pay these clowns for access to booty that I’ve captured from the high seas.
Jellyfin is what to use.
I love being able to post this yet again:
I have a lifetime Plex pass I got during a big sale like a decade ago, at 1/10 the price they are raising it to. I haven’t used it in about 6 months and never plan to even log into it again. Jellyfin 4 life!
I mean, I also have a whole bunch of windows keys from old MSDN accounts and stuff, but I am sure as shit not going to install Windows on my machines just because I can!
This is one of those situations where they’ll jack the fee up. Wait for everyone to stop pissing themselves. Then become heroes for listening and lowering it to the halfway point between the old few and the new one.
It’s to push people to buy “before it goes up.”
After the date then they can heavily discount it “for a limited time.”
Whats the benefit? I had an annual pass in like 2015 and got rid of it cuz the ps4 app was garbage. Fast forward to 2020 and I set a free one up cuz pandemic… I honestly don’t know why I paid in the first place.
Being upset with Plex because of what they’re doing with their prices is totally a legit gripe. Suggesting Plex is shitty is silly. It works great, it’s simple for boneheads like me, and if you paid $70 or whatever a decade or so ago, it’s been a phenomenal deal. I’m using it right now, I use it on a weekly basis at the very least, and it’s super art it and forget. I have a media library on my PC, when I add to it I just right click the taskbar icon and “update libraries,” and that’s it. It requires next to no fiddling, it runs perfectly, it finds subtitles automatically, it does the whole metadata thing automatically. It’s great, I have zero complaints.
But yeah, $700 or whatever is crazy talk. But $70 was awesome.
Suggesting Plex is shitty is silly.
I asked what the paid benefits were vs the free version. Everything you described is in the free version. Hence why I’m not sure why I ever paid in the first place. I don’t think I ever used any of the paid features.
I apologize, I didn’t understand that to be the meaning, maybe I gotta read better. I don’t have an answer. I can’t remember what prompted me to grab a lifetime pass. I have to assume there’s some benefit, and that it was obvious to me at the time.
Yea I still have a free server going and never hit a paywall.
Paying for plex pass gets you hardware transcoding (GPU), and access to Plexamp if you use it for music. Also the ability to use it remotely outside your network I think (dunno, I don’t use that feature) It’s good stuff, but nowhere near worth what they’re charging. I paid $80 for my lifetime Plex pass some years back.
Honestly, even without the $750 pricing, they’ve been consistently raising it for years now, presumably to encourage monthly subscriptions. I don’t trust them, and it’s falling into the category of “you’ll own nothing and be happy.” The other day I even read something about a user losing access to their Plex because Plex themselves didn’t renew their certificate and they had to reach out to support to sort it out. That’s… just completely fucked up. I hate that it requires an online account to access your local content. They did that years ago, and it’s led to me wanting to use it less and less.
I have a Jellyfin server as backup, and have already moved away from Plexamp to use Lyrion and Navidrome instead for music.
The only reason I still use Plex at all is because I watch a lot of foreign content and Swiftfin hasn’t yet updated to use Apple TV’s accessibility settings for captions (Plex lets you override subtitles with the Apple TV caption settings for readability and consistency). Though I saw the Jellyfin team merged the change the other day, so I expect a fix for that to come with the next major update. If that works out, I’ll be deleting Plex from my Proxmox server finally.
This is why I have Jellyfin.
I was waiting for this story after I saw that on my inbox.
Waiting until “plex pro” and they slowly sunset features on the original plex lifetime pass.
Bruh just use jellyfin. Using it for over 2 years w/o a hiccup.
Bye Felicia
Real debrid is currently complying with a legal crackdown and is applying a filter that prevents access to their cached torrents if the title includes a bunch of different common piracy phrases, such as Web, WebDL, the names of common trackers, etc.
Might eventually ease up, might not. Worth it to ride it out for a bit and see what happens if you’re already subbed as some results still play, but for anyone new looking into stremio/kodi/jellyfin you should probably consider something like an easynews + torbox combo
