    This is a fun rabbithole I dove down once. As a native Floridian my mind was fully blown by Florida having been a Spanish colony for 250 (1513-1763) years*, longer than it’s been a US state (1845-2027).
    Both displaced natives and slaves obtained freedom in Florida… until Spain ceded the land to Britain, which I’m sure was a dark day for many.

      It was literally this time I realised that florida is actually a Spanish word (meaning something like flowery).
