George Wendt, an actor with an Everyman charm who played the affable, beer-loving barfly Norm on the hit 1980s TV comedy “Cheers” and later crafted a stage career that took him to Broadway in “Art,” “Hairspray” and “Elf,” has died. He was 76.
Wendt’s family said he died early Tuesday morning, peacefully in his sleep while at home, according to the publicity firm The Agency Group.
“What’s shaking, Norm?”
“All four cheeks & a couple of chins.”
“Night, everybody.”
Weird that he was only 76, he looked like he was in his 50s back in the 80s.
Edit He was 34 when Cheers started and 45 when it ended…
Coach: What would you say to a nice beer, Normie?
Norm: Going down?
Norm!
All the angels used the best greeting…Norm!
I’ll have a beer in your name tomorrow. My gf and I are watching through Cheers currently, only season 2 and it’s all nostalgia. To be fair we don’t really remember most of these early episodes but every episode feels like watching TV with my parents in the 80s to me.
I loved Harry Anderson as Harry the Hat, then they gave him Night Court.
But Norm would be pissed you let a good beer go unconsumed.
He played a delightful psycho in the John Landis directed episode “Family” of Masters of Horror. Always a pleasure to see him pop up in stuff.
Damn Norm, good job living until 76. Definitely won the over
Fun fact: Jason Sudeikis is his nephew.
