In one of the most iconic moments coming out of World Youth Day, Pope Francis called on the hundreds of thousands gathered before him to yell back at him that the Catholic Church is for “todos, todos, todos” – everyone, everyone, everyone.

So sex outside marriage is a mortal sin, and we still aren’t allowed to get married in the Catholic Church. Got it.

Yeah, I, as a queer person who grew up in a Catholic country, always felt very welcome

PR pope says PR talking point. Jorge Mario Bergoglio was a piece of shit homophobic bigot, long before he was made pope. Still refuses to meet or acknowledge the victims of his clergy. He’s nothing but talk, and not even his own followers listen to him. Go to any third world country full of Catholics and see if they treat LGBT people well because the pope said so.

Also, how does he claim to be pro lgbt while passing decrees that prevent priests from blessing same sex unions?

IANAP but nobody goes to hell in Catholicism. Big Catholic doesn’t want you to know but in order to go to hell you need to sin without guilt but there’s a technicality that you cannot sin without your soul feeling some guilt since the holy spirit resides within and will always experience guilt at the sin committed it means you’re good.

There is a hell, i.e. all those who die in personal mortal sin, as enemies of God, and unworthy of eternal life, will be severely punished by God after death.

        From the Catholic Encyclopedia.

Now I’m not clear from Google whether or not gay sex is a mortal sin, but it seems like it’s leaning on yes. Just being gay might not send you to Hell in Catholicism, but acting on it? Sounds like maybe.

What a stupid religion, “hey you have free will and I totally gave it to you, BUT I SWEAR TO MYSELF ILL TORTURE YOU FOR LIFE IF YOU DO THINGS I DON’T LIKE ARBITRARILY!”

How self loathing can a person be?

“I need to pick a religion, but I can’t decide which… oh, yes, Catholicism looks good.”

You 👏 don’t 👏 need 👏 religion. Just live your life. Make genuine connections with friends. Be good to everyone. Try to leave the world better than it would have been without you. No magic required.

Then I assume he’s going to apologize for this?

Roman Catholic Church Pours $2 Million into Discrimination against LGBT Americans - November 15, 2012

The Roman Catholic Church hierarchy funneled $2 million into entirely unsuccessful efforts to advance discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in the four marriage ballot states of Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, and Washington this election cycle. An updated HRC report, available at www.hrc.org/catholicreport, provides a snapshot of just how much money the Church, along with its close ally the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), poured into campaigns aimed solely at depriving LGBT Americans of dignity and respect.

Good PR move to distract where the diacese spend their cash. We know what the Catholic Church values based on the money they spend trying to influence politics; hey, just like the time they spent millions trying to prevent the statute of limitations from being expanded for child sexual abuse…

Is it progress though? It’s easy for them to talk the talk, but they don’t appear to be doing anything to walk the walk. This is lip service, at best.

Is this a “But only if you stop being gay.” Thing or is this “no being gay is okay” thing?

I wouldn’t go as far it’s them saying being gay is okay, but they’re claiming all queer people can come and be active members of the church. The issue is that they’re saying that while simultaneously treating LGBTQ+ people as second third degree citizens. They are “welcoming” us while also refusing to see us as equal and still claiming homosexuality is ungodly. It’s the bullshit cries of a cult in its death throes.

“You can join us, but only if promise to become like us”….

Not surprised I have a very different definition of “welcome”.

First time seeing him say this sort of stuff? It’s like a business making their logo rainbow at this point.
