  • doesn’t work well in my experience. now I typically just leave my mirrors all the way out and up when driving at night, so the headlights never hit my eyes from them

I can see everything I need to from the rearview and turning my head. it’s not like you can see anything using the side mirrors at night when somebody with LED headlights is behind you anyways, all you see is a giant flare and you can’t even tell if it’s in your lane or the next lane or how close it is

LED headlights are literally making the roads less safe by decreasing visibility and awareness

  • People have already mentioned most of the maker and DIY channels that I enjoy

so I’ll mention a new to me channel — Hunter Direction

if you already like most of the machinist and maker channels, and you like cars, then you will probably love this channel. seems like it’s a guy just making videos about his project cars, which expanded into making videos about his projects (home ownership stuff). but his latest stuff is scripted and shot and edited so damn well, it’s art. I would highly recommend watching his last couple videos. they’re not short but god damn are they quality

oh, and Mujin. I didn’t see anybody mention him. another dry humor DIY type channel. love it.

  • I want to know how many are related to drivers blinded by LED headlights. I’ve seen (and been a part of) dozens of near hits in the past few years because of this.

edit: Let me just be very clear about this — if you think that the issue is only aftermarket headlights or modified vehicles, you are mistaken. you can look at pretty much any modern Toyota or Subaru or Mazda or pickup with LED headlights and see that the low beams are just as bright as the high beams, just aimed lower. and that aim lower does not matter when the low beams are shining in somebody’s face, which happens often because roads are not level and flat. and you know where this is often the case? intersections. intersections often are raised in the middle, which means the car on the other side is angled slightly upwards, which means their low beam LED headlights are blasting the person on the other side in the face, even with their “but much cutoff is correct excuse”.

the simple inexcusable unavoidable fact is that headlights that blind people like this with this frequency are simply bad design and dangerous, and yes they also make the driver an asshole for having that vehicle and treating other people like this. like how would people feel if I just went around blasting them in the face with a flashlight that bright while walking around. they’d be livid. this is literally not any different, you’re not special just because you bought a 4,000 lb vehicle that has dangerous features.

  • I think you should treat others with respect

except like always treat them how you’d like to be treated, not just when it’s convenient for you. which seems to be the boomer way. example: boomers loooove bright ass LED headlights when they’re driving behind them, but complain when they’re blinded by the exact same car facing them.

so the solution is don’t use those fucking headlights, right? but all these motherfuckers out here are just buying that shit up and don’t see a problem with it. I nearly hit somebody last week because they were crossing 100 m before the intersection in a spot that pedestrians typically do not cross and I couldn’t see shit because of the oncoming car right behind them.

  • red light ones are not great due to increased rear endings from some idiot slamming the brakes on when they should have gone through / people rushing and assuming the person in front will go through the yellow.

speed ones work great, when placed appropriately (i.e. on a street with an appropriate speed limit for the road design and in areas of higher pedestrian activity). I hate that Ontario just banned speed enforcement cameras, because that means a loss of revenue to pay for the road network maintenance, more police activity enforcing speed (which a camera does automatically all day long) which means police aren’t doing more important stuff and also it’s a waste of my tax dollars, and they will have to spend more of my tax dollars putting shittier speed reduction methods in place like speed bumps (annoying as fuck, bad for fuel economy, loud because people race from speed bump to speed bump, ineffective because people pay attention racing from speed bump to speed bump instead of to what’s going on around them, annoying for bicycles and people with towing trailers, loud when people telling trailers go over them, loud when regular cars go over them, bad for snow plows…)

now, this is just for speed enforcement, not coordinating traffic flow. although in a properly designed network, there are times that this can actually be achieved, unlike those light cycles on arterial roads that let you go through if you speed just a little bit but if you go the speed limit you hit every single red light
