You can even use stories in signal, though I turned it off in settings and have forgotten since launch that it exists until this post reminded me.
One random use I found years ago was that I could instantly search for Comcast business boxes and then export the IPs as a csv, run a headless browser script to try default login creds, then scrape the wireless Mac, ssid, and password which I could plot on a map using wigle wifi wardriving data. It’s pretty cool. Maybe the monitoring service will come in handy if it ever notifies me of anything I should be concerned about on any of my IPs, hard to turn down a $5 lifetime pass.
I love this. I have it running on my Synology which has native docker support, reverse proxied through a wire guard tunnel to a digital ocean droplet.
I would argue that Mastodon and friends are a “good, healthy, worthwhile place to hang out”, at least it really feels that way to me. It seems to have attracted a really wholesome crowd that really delights me considering I’m used to it being less of a crowd but just a handful of techie people hanging out in an obscure clubhouse. All the same people I have followed there are still there yet I now have a buffet of variety to chat with.
Oof
many of them will come back by Wednesday
We have not seen any significant revenue impact so far
like all blowups on Reddit, this one will pass
They’re not entirely wrong, many will go right back, but it’s more about the broken trust. Reddit is dead to me and the refusal to listen to the community at all really seals it.
I think a blocklist of common sources of biased and sensationalized / misinformation sources would be the best option. It would definitely be a ton of work to whitelist every good source, and you especially want to encourage smaller trusted industry-specific sources (think like pv magazine), there are a lot of those small high quality sources that are geared towards industry professionals. With a short blocklist you could probably cover a significant portion of the loudest biased sources of misinformation.
