This is the most aggravating outcome. I am honestly extremely suspicious that this may just be his lawyers trying to get him the best feasible outcome in a context where the DoJ is not really following the rules.
They’re going for single digit prison time and trying to get the state case tossed under double jeopardy

Pleading guilty in federal stalking case.
Pleading not guilty to state charges for 2nd degree murder.
Government recommendation of 20-30 years in prison. Charges require a more than 0 years in prison with a possible maximum sentence of life in prison. Sentencing to happen in December.

Prosecution states that because there was no plea deal made and therefore is free to seek the maximum penalty and will seek life in prison.
This bums me out. I had hoped he would get a fair trial and be found not guilty. I do understand trying to get the best deal if he doesn’t believe that would happen, though.
Whatever factual admissions he made in the federal plea can usually be admitted as evidence in the state case. That could really blow up a case, but I assume that Mr. Mangione’s excellent legal team has already figured out what consequences there are and briefed him on that.
They are trying to make an example out of him and stop copycats. But if they send Luigi to prison, that just makes prison more enticing. I’ll roll that dice if it means I can be his bunk mate.
