California governor Gavin Newsom announced that the state’s minimum wage will rise to $17.40 next year, a ay floor set to become the highest of any US state.

The pay bump will go into effect starting 1 January, Newsom announced on Friday. The state’s current minimum rate is $16.90. In a news release, Newsom touted the move as a salve for working families amid high living costs and took a jab at the Trump administration.

“For years, Donald Trump and Republicans have blocked efforts to raise the federal minimum wage while handing tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations,” Newsom said.

It’s okay to be aggressive, and it’s also okay to be wrong. But one must not be both aggressive and wrong.

California’s minimum wage is tied to the Consumer Price Index. It increases every year according to inflation.

Edit: To be more specific, it is indexed to CPI-W.

Seattle does this and ties it to the CPI-W. It’s currently $21.30, which isn’t the highest in the country due to surrounding cities in the same Seattle metro area having slightly more, like $21.65 in Tukwila, $21.63 in Burien, and $21.50 in Renton. Every Seattle metro area city and even unincorporated King County (6309 sqmi for all of the metro area with 4.16 million residents) all have their own city/county laws to tie it to CPI-W.

I don’t see why everyone doesn’t do this.

I’m not anti this by any means, we need better for the general people. But this at the time he continues to fuck with and freeze state workers is a bit frustrating.

I sure do wish these media outlets would stop jerking off Gavin Newsom. He’s only comparatively progressive.

Well, no, it’s not that he’s being reported on, I just don’t like how he’s positioning himself as a sewer socialism progressive while being anything but. The media is broadly complicit in that framing and I fear he’ll be the next milquetoast DNC safety pick for president regardless of the generally shifted demographics preference away from that.

the real taunt would be increasing the proposed minimum wage increase by one penny each time Trump signs an executive order (retroactively too).

Commies bitching in the comments about Noosem not doing enough, when literally no other state has a higher wage than this.

If this was Mamdani, you guys would be chanting “REVOLUTIONARY” 😂

But once again. Ignore any progress if it’s not from your favorite sports player-I mean politician

inflation is caused by free money. This as much as it is welcome for the people impacted by crazy costs of life, will only keep ramping up inflation.

They need to stop giving free money and make everyone compete. if you have any savings turn them to gold, the dollar will only continue to crumble
