The original is now in the public domain in most countries, but I think Barrie did a really good deed with it, because over the years, a not inconsiderable amount of money must have been raised. In the UK, the copyright still seems to apply due to an exemption.

Unfortunately, this is only possible to a limited extent today, as billionaires are now feeding their LLMs with copyright-protected material for profit and not paying a dollar for it. So today, the hospital would have had only a fraction of the revenue at its disposal.
