Reddit is removing your chat history from before 2023::As part of a migration to a new architecture, Reddit chose not to migrate chat histories before 2023. Though it offers a way for users to request their old data, including chat histories, some users say they’re still missing messages.

Porn subs used it a lot, beyond that I’m pretty sure it was mostly useless

I had someone start a chat with me that I was sure was a scam, but I was bored so I kept talking. Turned out the girl lived about 20 minutes from me, which I was also skeptical about. She wanted to meet up and I decided to risk it (this was after a couple weeks and a lot of back and forth). We went to a park for a walk… turned out it was a real person, not a scam, and she was pretty normal. She then ghosted me. I get it, even after talking for an hour or so I still had my guard up and commented about being surprised no one broke into my car (I was kind of joking, but kind of not)… but still shitty considering she was talking about how she was looking for friends and I never indicated I was looking for anything more than that either.

That being said, the chat feature was still stupid and nothing of value is being lost here. Other than that one time, it was all bots, OF girls, or crypto bros.

The only time I ever chatted was with a guy who tried convincing me the Holocaust wasn’t real

Towards the end there anytime someone would pm me about something like 80% of the time it’d be a chat. I exclusively browsed on Reddit sync so when I randomly got on reddit desktop and saw I had like 10 chats from months ago it surprised me. Just goes to show how the community has shifted from when I first started 13 years ago and now imo.

Yeah I used RIF for 99% of my Reddit browsing. Once I logged onto Reddit on my PC and found some months old chat comment for someone that was requesting help with an experience I had. I felt bad about not seeing it because I genuinely would have given them a comment on it sooner if they would have just PMed me.
