Summary
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced plans for constitutional reforms to protect Mexico’s sovereignty after the U.S. designated six Mexican cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.
The designation has raised concerns in Mexico about potential U.S. military intervention.
Sheinbaum vowed to prevent foreign interference in legal matters and proposed enshrining restrictions on foreign agents.
Additionally, she seeks harsher penalties for foreign gun traffickers. With a congressional majority, her Morena party is positioned to pass the reforms despite tensions with the U.S.
Just as long as the foreign agents bill doesn’t conflict with the EU’s law on press freedom. If it does, Mexico will never be admitted to the EU. Wait, I’m thinking of Georgia. Never mind, carry on.
I don’t quite understand why the US and Mexico haven’t teamed up on this issue. From what I understand the cartels are a huge force in Mexico that need a military to deal with. The US should be able to provide support in the form of intelligence, funding, etc. Maybe even feet on the ground. It would benefit both countries a lot.
-
Because if the US gets rid of the problem, we don’t have a convenient ‘other’ enemy to point to when we want to dump money into the military or give an excuse for MAGAts to attack Mexican-Americans.
-
Because then we wouldn’t have an excuse to invade Mexico. And make no mistake, he wants us to invade Mexico. Fascists need wars and ‘other’ enemies in order to keep people in their borders distracted and supportive.
Canada is in danger too. His handlers need a war and they want resources, and Canada has a lot of natural resources to plunder.
But he’ll go for Mexico first because it’s filled with brown people who we’ve been told are all terrorists who sneak over the border to take our jobs. It’s an easier target.
-
Corruption, Mexico is practically ran by the Gangs, and America won’t give up there Guns to save school children let alone a foreign nation pumping drugs across it’s boarders, no matter your opinion this reaction to the US is because the cartels are pushing for it. The cartels might as well be a separate branch of the Mexican Government.
I think this varies depending on where you live. Some places are freer than others and do see their taxpayer funds being respected with progressive initiatives being funded, public spaces becoming more accessible, and social programs decently furnished for as long as I can remember. They pass with a little skimming off the top, if you know why I mean. But besides that, I doubt this would be the case if we were being completely overrun by other interests like in the 80s.
That said, we do have examples like the Iguala mass kidnapping from 2014 where a local government colluded with ex-cartels members to disappear 43 students. So overall, to me, it’s a mixed bag.
