The last real “emergency” emergency I was involved in, was on the phone to someone who was talking to a guy on the edge of the bridge.

Friend of mine was out delivering parcels and stopped because of a crowd on the bridge. They were worried because everyone was watching and waiting for the police, no one was talking to the guy who was looking down at the water.

They called me to ask what to do or say when they approached them.

That friend of mine is now a therapist themselves and a damn good one too.

You know how many cards there are in a deck?

People can shuffle them into a random order and then memorise the order, so it’s really not that many cards.

Each time you shuffle the deck it’s the same familiar cards, we can easily recognise and differentiate every card in the deck.

But how many different ways are there to arrange that deck of cards? How many possible combinations?

More than there are stars in the sky. Every shuffle is unique.

I love my job because I get to use familiar ideas to help people make sense of their own unique shuffle 😊

That’s not how I teach therapists to work.

We don’t use leading questions, we do really and genuinely want to understand and I’ve never worked with someone who wasn’t totally unique even if their story was superficially similar to another

A good therapist can feel like they’re reading your mind.

Emotional intelligence isn’t the only skill involved in that, still a big part of it.

“Gonna have to go lick my ass to get the taste out of my mouth”

Because we don’t have them in this country

The American people would never stand for that.

That’s fair. Your therapist isn’t there to fix the whole world with you.

Almost all creative acts create stuff that isn’t “objectively valuable”

We’ve been tricked into thinking that’s what creativity is about. It’s only worthwhile if it’s “succesful”

That’s not why humans have creativity though.

Excellent, I do love the way syncthing makes that simple.

I use SMBSync2 to move any pictures more than a month old into a backup folder so they don’t clog my phone. Keeps things neat.

Syncthing, automatic storage to my NAS and main PC.

Cathartic maybe, coin flip on whether it’s therapeutic or not.

Well, it could go either way.

One of the reasons therapists exist is they’re not blank voids like the internet.

They can respond in human ways, be real and realistic. Help put the confession into context of a person’s life.

Without that, it’s a role of the dice. Some people will come away feeling lighter.

Some will come away with a sensation of having talked themselves into believing they’re a piece of ****.

I guess that’s why AITA is such a popular format.
